Yes, indeed. And the vast majority of all alternative file manager users do it with TC, which looks like it is programmed by Klingons. :P

Might be naive:
7-Zip libraries can be used for commercial applications (Developer FAQ) as long as the GNU LGPL license conditions are met (so the wrapper part of the code has to be under the LGPL as well).

Thanks but I do not use 3rd party stuff.

I'm often surprised to hear that some of the features I like most are those which you've added reluctantly and/or that you never use yourself. It just goes to show how much variety there is in the way different people's brains process and work with information, and how much difference there is in individual's preferences.

Personally, I can't imagine using XY without Dual Pane -- I think it's great. Not to mention other things like Locked Tree and Tabsets, which I believe are your red-headed step-children.

And, of course, on the other hand there are features you love that I just don't get (I'm looking at you, Mini Tree :P )

At least the good thing is, XY is very customizable. :D
Let me hijack this: You as a Dual Pane user, would you see use in Dual Favorites? I vaguely plan to add them without settings, just caption, 2 locations, active pane (because I'm still not decided on a future-proof format for those settings -- Dual Locations as shown in the change log will remain an unofficial beta feature for the time being).

Are you absolutely sure about this? Because when I used to double click on a ZIP which was pretty big, it was shown as a folder almost immediately, seemingly without any extracting.

Yes, showing the contents is quick. The ZIP format comes with an index ready to read. But when you want to preview them you need to extract first.

Hmmm, IMHO the most important word to consider here is value.
i.e. the question is not "Do we think it's interesting?", but:
"Would it add a real value to our workflow?" - compared to what we already have/do.

And the question for you is: Who are you targeting?
If I may,
• Everybody: "Well, yeah, nice effort... but..."
• Mr Below-Average Joe (and people dealing with him): No.
- Cause: "It doesn't work, why isn't it a folder?"
• Mr Average Joe & more: No.
- Cause: "Please sir, I've lots of rars, why can't I extract them?"
• Mr Above-Average Joe: No.
- Cause: "I need to rar/7zip/YouNameIt with compression level X and encryption."
• Me: No.
- Cause: "Wait, isn't Zip a drive?" Just kidding.
I use installed Izarc and FreeArc, plus CommandLines of FreeArc, 7Zip... via script and menu for dedicated operations.

Portability: again, what are the expectations of the users who work that way?
Would this implementation be enough for their needs, vs a simple CTB/Script driving a small command-line tool?

Only my POV here, and I know it's a bit dark but I think you're right:
All this looks like a huge dock of containers of cans of worms... :bug:

PS: Ofc, if that can help, I'll happily share my Archiving scripts.

OTOH,

I had totally discarded TrackerV3 and had written off XY for too long because I thought it was still single pane.
Conclusion: not representative, others must speak. 8)

Borut wrote:Some workaround regarding 64bit-Shell issues, Live Filter for List, Clickable Droppable Per Pane Breadcrumb, Native support for ZIP and RAR, Support for Non-Drive Devices.
I'm only an occasional ZIP user so lack of built-in XY support doesn't really bother me -but- all of the items Borut mentioned (except Live Filter) seem to be quite frequently the cause for new threads here by new/potential users so while adding these may not have a noticeable effect on sales increase, you also never know how many sales you may not have gotten by lack of some/all of these that other products have.

We've all answered many times questions from newbies (and sometimes trolls  ) about these so having these would also help keep this forum cleaner -- not a financial benefit but helps with clutter.

So I'd suggest adding the easiest to code and basic/core functions for ZIP (and RAR, if possible) first and see what effect on complaints/wishes you get here is from that...before you go hog-wild on it...and as you said, having that in XY would help when XY is used in portable situation.

I realize that there are unique functions that XY may get that would be more fun to program but sometimes the boring stuff is needed as well..

Addendum: FWIW, since you added DP, I've used x2 Lite much less often for those cases where I'm comparing folders visually -- REALLY helps in those cases! And when I've got a set of internal HD folders on pane 1 and the matching external HD folders on pane 2...not easy when only one pane so I DO apprecaite having DP!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

OK, on the whole not extremely enthusiastic (me inlcuded). :)

What about a little extra-value: "Paste as Zip". Anybody? (hey, I could even see myself using this.)

Thinking further... I am not sure if I (or someone else) already asked (and got declined; hm, was it a multi-language concept problem?) the following: Would it be possible to optionally have a script associated to an item in a right click pop-up menu (on D&D)? If possible (and if a dropping target folder and dragged objects could be inferred from the SC functions) then an appropriate command line could be formed and a compressing tool called from a script, wouldn't it?

You can already call scripts via right-click using PFA (if you have the "Open With..." item enabled in the right-click menu). (not for D&D right-click menus though)

But note that most all of us who feel that way are long time users of XY who are already participating in the XY party whereas ZIP support would/could help get others in the door to the party, I feel.

We have adjusted to the way it works now and not to say we'd not use it if added but maybe just less of a priority to us than to the target audience that, based on forum posts in other threads, desires it much more...and many of them are likely not forum regulars so hard to get their input.

Yeah, who knows who's lurking out there?!

I just got an email from soft93.com telling me this:
XYplorer listing (Program ID: 12748) has been updated on Soft93.com according to changes in your PAD file:
Version number was changed from "7.60" to "12.50".
Program release date was changed from "2008-09-09" to "2013-06-12".
Who said the world is spinning ever faster? There are still guys, uh robots, taking it easy...
