I use my hard disk in a very strict way many years, so I always have C: and D: where on C: I have programs and on D: I have only data.
It's not so rare for me to restore (using norton ghost) the whole C: many times a day (usual when a virus is possible coming via internet) so it's crusial to have always my data on D: and nothing on C:
So I installed normally (not portable) XYplorer on C: and changed the startup.ini to "look" at D:\XY\ where I copied all XYplorer data.
I also made a new ghost (partition image) of C: in order for the XYplorer to be permantly into my installation after any future partition restore.
After setting some thousands file tags I remembered that a new feature called "portable tags" had already included so going to check I saw that it was deactivated (I can't select or deselect) !
I read that XYplorer had to be at the same partition from the beggining ..... I say ok, I'll resolve that and so I took the xyplorer_full_noinstall.rar and just unzipped into D:\XY_prog\
After that, I took the startup.ini (because I didn't find any at the portable edition) and copied to the D:\XY_prog\ so voila !
The portable edition on D: "looks" exactly the same XYplorer data as the normal version on C: !!!
So where is the big deal ?!
The point is that when I open the XYplorer on C: the checkbox for "portable tags" is still deactivated but at the same time the XYplorer on D: (which looks the same data) has that checkbox ACTIVATED !!
So finally I have a bad feeling that a great disaster may waiting for me if still using both XYplorer (it's easy to say "ok I'll use only the portable version on D: but what's gonna happen by mistake if use the local ?
Is there actually a problem or it's just my fear ?
PS : also, is this finally the best way for someone to overcome the constraint for having the program in the same partition with the data after a long long using of local version though he has the data at another place ? (I mean : did I find a solution or is a dangerous trick
