hmm.. not really sure, but if there is one I don't know it. What I just did though, is search for "informations" and edit all pages found.
Not sure if the search feature in mediawiki would return _all_ pages containing the word at least once, but it sure should help ;)

Risky I'm sure, but couldn't that kind of search and replace be done through phpMyAdmin or something similar using an SQL query?

***Disclaimer: I've watched people using SQL, I know some of the theory behind it, but nothing of the actual practice of using it!***

Also, having a little read through the wiki, I think it needs some pictures. I for one often benefit from actually seeing where something is as much as being told about it.

What's your bandwidth allowance like Jacky? I'd be willing to help out if needs be by providing additional server space/bandwidth and maybe even a domain name. I would have PM'd this bit, but Donald won't let us :(

E-Mail verification in XYWiki fails

Post by RalphM »

Jacky, I created an account in the wiki and tried several times to get my mail-address authenticated, but I never got the mail in my inbox, though I stated a valid mail address.
What's wrong there?

Sorry, I'm a bit lazy and didn't read much about the features of the wiki itself, but I was wondering, if I could upload my Word template I created for XY's report feature somehow, to make it easily accessible for all XY users?
Ralph :)

Fact is I never cared and just kept the default settings when I installed this forum.
Can you tell me shortly what's the PROs and CONs of this PM?

From the phpBB site:
Private messages can be described as a cross between email, instant messaging, and phpBB 2.0 forum posting.
Pro:
1) Would allow us forum members to contact other members without posting to forum, and without having to disclose private email/ICQ/etc data in our profile which is readable by anyone...I've had a couple of occasions when I would have liked to contact jacky and (can't remember who it was) about some info that didn't really need to be on forum...

There have also been some times when it could have been used to inform a poster about spelling/typo errors or similar that by posting a normal reply about it might possibly embarrass the poster by being in public.

2) Better than email as it's restricted to members of forum, so spam is quite unlikely...and sending ability CAN be restricted by admin by user to futher eliminate it...I've not had any problems yet with it on StevesForums, which is a international usage forum for digital photography that I visit on occasion, and which uses similar software.

Cons:
Does allow unknown users to contact you/us, and text is private so possible hostile text could be sent that might not be done if public...however, if such text is received, admin can block sender in future...

Summary:
I've used this feature in a few other forums and found it quite handy...
As it keeps msgs within the forum site so finding them later is easier than if by email...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Okay, it's enabled. Have fun! :)

Well JC said that better than I ever could, and thanks for enabling it ;)

Mainly I just use it if there's something that's OT or only of interest to one person.

Not sure if it could, especially since I think, haven't really looked for sure, but I think data are stored as Binary on the DB, so might not be able to do a search&replace as easilly...
Anyways, the manual way worked fine so ;)

Agreed. I've been thinking about this too, but haven't really decided how to do it. Gotta see how it's all handled by the wiki & how to use it "best".
What I don't really wanna do on the wiki is have some of the usual screenshots-with-thumbs, as in "here's XY with color filters on, etc" since all that is already well made on XY's website!
lukescammell wrote:I'd be willing to help out if needs be by providing additional server space/bandwidth and maybe even a domain name.
Thanks, BW is unmetered and I don't have space problems/needs for now so it's all good 8) Thanks for the offer though.
Regarding a domain name, I don't know. If you're willing to pay for it & all, why not... ;) might wanna PM Don first though maybe, see how he feels about it....

hmm.. I don't know. It's worked before, so maybe check if you have a "junk" folder or something like that, in case the mail got tagged as spam somehow....
I guess I could flag it as auth manually, but you would't received any mails then either, obviously, so no real point of doing that....

I don't think so, uploading files is meant for pictures only.

Tonight the wiki is WAKI! I'm getting a SQL error and it keeps looping in a refresh...so let's hope that jacky has a good backup just in case!

This is where my lack of SQL stumps me, but Google suggests this.

The should be informative I agree. A good starting point, would be an XY screen with the areas clearly marked. This doesn't appear to be on the website and would help all those who read an instruction and think "what's the <something>?"

I think if there's going to be a picture, it shouldn't usually be a thumbnail. This way you can print out the page from the wiki and it's still useful. It's not like we have t use a full screenshot every time afterall :)

Maybe I'll come knocking on your door then

I'll PM, but what about just wiki.xyplorer.com ? Would seem to be the logical place? If Donald doesn't want it there because it's "unofficial" I understand, then perhaps something like xyplorerwiki.com (I looked for xywiki.com but it's already "under construction and coming soon" - yeah right...).

Yes it was :( Sorry about that, not sure what happened exactly but seems that the server was all weird... Restarted it & seems to be running fine again, at last!

Well, right now the wiki is on a different server than XY website. To do that, need to know first if that can be done with XY's host, I'm not sure how this would work... (Or it'll have to move the wiki to XY current host....)

Maybe I'm totally wrong, as this is slightly out of my area of knowledge, but I thought there was some way to redirect a URL like wiki.xyplorer.com to a different server than xyplorer.com, and that could then put it over to jacky's server...or am I 100% in error? :?

That's possible. Only what's the purpose of it? (I did not follow the thread very closely because I had that bug in my back, I still smell the smoke of it).

Some unordered things concerning this topic:

- I'm also a PHP/MySQL programmer, so I could answer some of your questions IF i had the time

- I would not mind hosting the wiki at wiki.xyplorer.com (indeed that looks like the best URL for it).
But:
(a) it's kind of jacky's baby and if I host it then he is out of the game (AFAIK I cannot give individual FTP access to subdomains -- although I might research on this deeper...)
(b) I have currently neither the knowledge nor the time to manage the wiki
On the other hand:
(a) IF I find a way to convert the wiki into an offline help system, then of course direct FTP access to the wiki would be necessary for me.
(b) The wiki would be independent of jacky (sorry jacky  ) -- while it is obviously great for me that jacky takes care, it means at the same time that I am depending on him, and the better and important the wiki gets the stronger is the dependency.

So, the bottomline: I think I should host it, but I don't like that conclusion

You're absolutely correct, but it is host dependant and who knows what Donald's host is like? ;)
