Disable Calculate Folder Sizes on Network Drives

Post by shinyplastic »

Hi All,

New to XY - thanks for a great program.

Just wondering if there is any way to disable calculating folder sizes for network drives? Love the size feature (used to use Folder Sizer), but can't live with the 20+ seconds refresh on the network.

As a work around I couldn't see how to have different folder size selections in each tab (or even each pane).

I did search the forum, but could only find mention of this is passing (apologies if I missed a similar request).

Thanks for any advice!

Hi and welcome,

no, that's currently not possible. Might be an idea for later.

The workaround is to quickly navigate to where you want to go, or if you dont want to kill it, just backspace to local Computer and you should be fine.

Don, is this too complicated to fix ? With everyone working on their own networks these days this would be awesome to have, please consider.

These could be the implemented options when navigating to a n/w drive:

1. Have an option to disable FS for N/w and Removable drives
2. If FS enabled for N/w, ask user whether to calculate Folder Sizes (in non-modal mode) when user navs to n/w drive
3. Timeout/ask user whether to cancel calculating FS for current drive

Thanks for listening !

Ok nevermind the fix, this software is pure genius.

Steps for permanent workaround:

1. Disable Calculate Folder Size in file lists
2. In toolbar (initially I had completely removed it because I dont use any of the generic icons) add 'Calculcate Folder Size'
and this speeds up even local browsing. When you need FS, just press the button !!

This is one of the most user friendly things I have even seen in all my years of GUI software.

Other useful buttons to add (which by the way arent in most explorer alts): Toggle View (Thumbnails/Detail), Toggle Show Hidden, Command Prompt, etc

Keep up the good work Gentlemen ! With some more testing I'm on my way to getting rid of Q-Dir, FreeCommander, CubicExplorer, Explorer++, xplorer2 (yuck) et all

Yep, I'll add that to the next version, in this way:

Code: Select all

[x] Show folder sizes in file list
[x] In network locations as well
You think removable drives should be handled as well? Aren't they usually fast enough?

We forum veterans certainly agree with you on both of those points! :D

Just to make sure you know: "Gentlemen" isn't the correct term (since it implies multiple people), as there is only ONE developer for XY: Don Lessau (aka admin) so we'd say "Superman" is better!

The rest of us here are just very dedicated users who try and help out the XY community, ok?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
