Not sure if it matters, but when I created the temp.bat as per above, I had to use a second instance of XY... The first one was locked up with the script step dialog.
OK, sorry about the lock thing, i should have asked you to cancel the script and then run the bat. But result should be the same.

Can you try running the bat file as Administrator? As in right-click on the file and Run as Administrator.
Do you see HTTP_response.txt file now?

Also, does the command prompt window stay open or close after a while?

The fact that I get the same results on both computers makes me think it's just some dumb setting I set a long time ago and forgot about.

Maybe I'll try to do a fresh portable XY install on a thumb drive and try that way--just to see what happens.
Thanks you two, for you help on this. :biggrin:
Ah ah, it has to work now, Dr House wants to find the cause :mrgreen: (it's not lupus, apparently...)
Try running everything as administrator as serendipity suggests, and if it doesn't help try with a fresh portable install on another computer.

Okay, I tried as "Administrator." Earlier the window was staying open for a second or two, then closing.
Now it's closing so fast I can barely capture it.

Note that doing a "Copy resolved" from step 76 yields

Code: Select all

run

Also tried a new install of "Portable" XY--all tidy in its own subfolder--and got the same errors.

Are there any other scripts around that you guys know of, that create a text file?
It seems that my evil computers don't want me to automate the creation of text files(?)

Remember: Different operating systems AND different antiviri!

As it turns out, I also use Freeplane, and have a custom Groovy script that creates text files for me, and that works fine! :whistle:

Are you sure that's the parsed and resolved text you pasted above?
I see that %winsysdir% is not resolved at all for you?
It should resolve to C:\Windows\System32\ or something similar.
What do you get when you paste below code in addressbar:

Code: Select all

text %winsysdir%;
and hit enter?

:oops: , Copy command (Parsed and Resolved) at step 75.
Paste to text file and rename as bat.
Run bat file.
Is the http_response.txt file created?

Similar result from line 75...

%winsysdir% does resolve correctly in the AB. (see also top of page 5, above)
I went ahead and changed what was copied from step 75 so it had "C"\Windows\System32\" and put it in the BAT file. Got the following:

Sorry, i thought you removed the cmd part from bat file, that works only from inside XY.
After step 75 cancel script and paste below to text file, rename extension to bat and run it.
Is the HTTP_response.txt file created?

Code: Select all

C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe //nologo "C:\Users\swkunkel\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Scripts\SimpleUpdater\HTTP_checker.vbs" "http://www.xyplorer.com/download/xyplorer_11.90_beta_noinstall.zip" "Sun, 20 Jul 1969 08:17:40 GMT" "C:\Users\swkunkel\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Scripts\SimpleUpdater\HTTP_response.txt"

Same same and same.
(the Batman theme is popping into my head: "Same .bat time, some .bat channel.")

I made a screencast for your viewing pleasure...
http://screencast.com/t/2BE0yB3sOw

I can send a PM with my XYplorer.ini if you want (don't want to post publicly because security).
Given my above experiment with the fresh portable install, I don't think that will help though.

Note: I have in-laws coming in from out of town, so I might be off-line for a few days....
Thanks Guys.

hmm ok... cant explain.
one last thing, can you copy xyplorer into a another folder in another drive say D:\ and repeat the whole thing?
I see the path you are in is long, maybe something like D:\Xyplorer to test from?

xyplorer.ini wont help, you are testing from fresh XY anyway.

I just ran this

Code: Select all

"Make text file"
   $a = substr("HelloWorld", 0, 24);
    $fileName = "$a.txt";
    $modFileName = writefile("C:\Users\Kunkel\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Scripts\$fileName", hello2, r);
    $fileName = (gettoken($modFileName, 2, "|") != "") ? gettoken($modFileName, 2, "|") : $fileName;
    focus(list);
    #485;
    sel 1; selectitems $fileName;
Which is adapted from http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... ile#p77925
and it seems to create a text file no prob.

OK, but in this case cscript creating the text file, so its not the same.
btw, I guess you already ruled out this which Filehero encountered:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 093#p80093

Also, like i said before, could you copy XYplorer (fresh install) to a non-system drive say D:\ and copy the simpleupdater script there and reproduce this error?

Blah-
I keep putting a reply, but it is not 'sticking...' :evil:

Tried fresh install the thumbdrive a few days ago with no luck,

But then this morning, on my laptop (while plugged in to network at work) the script started working! :)

Don't know why.

All these days you were *not* plugged to a network? or was the network different?

Remember that I was getting the same error message from home, on my (never networked) home PC. IDK though. As mentioned in a previous reply, Win 7 acts glitchy as heck when it is setup to be networked, but is temporarily unable to access it--so that might be related. I never used to have problems with XP. Gawd I hate Windows 7...
