Good a'noon all,
Just wondered if it's at all possible to do what's in the title of this thread?
What I'm trying to do,is to *Always* have folders sorted by name, regardless of any changes to the files within them, but at the same time,to *Always* have the files they contain, sorted by Modified (ascending).
I've found that if I change the sort options for either folders or files,it seems to automatically change the sort order of the other,at the same time.
It isn't any sort of deal breaker,as it's obviously only a matter of 2 or 3 clicks to revert back, but having to do that every time is becoming a bit of a pain.
I'm a (semi-retired) studio & wedding photographer,so this would seem totally logical to me.

Tick like this:
+ Configuration | General | Keep folders on top
+ Configuration | General | Sort folders always ascending
- Configuration | General | Mixed sort on date columns
Then sort by Modified ascending. Should work.

Re: Sort folders by name, contents by date modified.
Tried that, unfortunately the moment I apply *any* of the Mixed Sort options, the folders just randomize,eg:-
FJ immediately followed by AA,then CF followed by BC etc.,whereas of course I'd like 'em to just sit there in alphabetical order, and remain that way....for ever...AA,BC,CF,FJ etc. right down to ZZ
Of course,I can achieve that by selecting sort by name, which is perfect for folders, but no good for my files,as I need the *contents/files* contained within those folders to always be sorted by Modified (Ascending) rather than purely by name.
I do a bit of Photoshopping, and when completed,I save the file in its original folder, then resort the files into original number order using a small app. called NewFileTime using 'From File Time (selected)' which has always worked faultlessly for me.
So,having waffled on,I guess I'm simply looking for an option whereby I can sort Folders one way,ie:-always by name,& Files another,ie:-Modified (ascending)and apply both as default, rather than having to use one all encompassing view for everything.

I don't understand. Do you have a screenshot?Aristophenes wrote:Tried that, unfortunately the moment I apply *any* of the Mixed Sort options, the folders just randomize,eg:-

Re: Sort folders by name, contents by date modified.
Sorry,I don't have a screenshot,nor am I 100% sure how to upload one.
I currently have folders set in thumbnail view as :-
Name (ascending) ticked, with 'Sort folders apart' also ticked
I have the tree on the left, and rows of 8 folders on the right (main window) all in correct alphabetical order, which is great, just how I want everything.
My difficulty starts whenever I open a folder,as all files are then also sorted in alphabetical order, which I definitely don't want.I'd like the files (mainly .png,.raw,or .jpg)to open up as I left them, after photoshopping,or whatever, which is Modified (ascending).
If I change the view to Modified (ascending),whilst viewing files, and then return to the folders at the top of the hierarchy,it then also changes the order of the folders,to....surprise surprise ...Modified (ascending) with the most recently modified being at the bottom of the page, rather than having them remain in strict alpahabetical order.
Whenever I tick any of the 'Mixed' options under General\Sorting and apply,my folders appear to be randomly sorted,so rather than...
A B C D E F G H
I J K L M N O P
They'll appear as something like...
H R B K T D N A
M G C E V F X I
So basically, every single time I open either my image folders,or files within those folders,I'm having to change the preferred view, and then change it back again once I exit.
I've tried setting preferred my preferred views as defaults, but still the difficulty remains.

Re: Sort folders by name, contents by date modified.
Had to abandon my efforts with XYP unfortunately,as it was taking far too long to get even the simplest options functioning correctly,(crashes & lock-ups started occurring) and "Time is money" as they say.
Still got it installed though, and will probably have another dabble some time in the future.
Fortunately WE is working fine once more for my relatively simple requirements,as I was probably never likely to use tabs etc.,and some of the other more esoteric functions anyway.
I just want to make it perfectly clear that I'm not 'dissing' XYP in any way,and can still see it's a fine piece of work, which I'll carry on recommending to those with more time on their hands & more complex requirements,it's just not for me at the moment.

Sorry that you did not get it resolved in XY, Just curious to know you tried using Folder View Settings (FVS).
You have particular view and save it and it will remain the way you left it.
Read about it:
http://www.xyplorer.com/release_7.50.htm#fvs
http://www.xyplorer.com/tour/index.php?page=fvs
Also look it up in XY's help file.
Let us know how this goes.
Re: Sort folders by name, contents by date modified.
I'm just bringing this thread back from the dead because it's exactly what I'm trying to achieve. (but have failed).
So far nothing seems to work. To clarify; I am trying to have all the folder inside another folder in alphabetical order, then any other files that are in the same folder, in addition to all the other folders, are to be in 'last modified' order.

And now a real world example pleaseall the folder inside another folder in alphabetical order, then any other files that are in the same folder, in addition to all the other folders, are to be in 'last modified' order

Re: Sort folders by name, contents by date modified.
Folders in alphabetical order, other files in last modified order. At the moment if you apply the fix suggested, then click 'modified', everything gets arranged in modified order. I want the folders to stay in alphabetical order.
EDIT: Solved it, all you have to do is Tools/Config/Sort and Rename/ Tick Sort Folders Apart/Keep Folders on top & Sort Folders always ascending.
Works for me anyway.
