there is no error message i got for this, but as i said one needs to wait a bit between types to go to other file in list,
to use "type ahead find". It was already clear in first post of this thread.

I *think* you mean that when you type ahead and land on a file and then want to type ahead to another file, you need to wait a little while (I think about 1 second) before XYplorer picks up that you've started again?

If that's it, I think it's inevitable that restarting type ahead find, requires a pause to distinguish between refining you original search and starting a new one?

No, it was not clear and that's why Don asked...because it seems that English may not be your native language so that makes it more difficult to know what exactly you meant by "between types" as that could mean time between each keystroke OR time between each find string as nas8e9 said.

XY needs to know that you're done with a string and not just maybe a very slow typist so that a longer pause between strings is needed.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Why pause? As I referred to:

Because a slow typist may well have close to 1 second between each keystroke and it must have that even longer pause to indicate "I'm done typing - now find this string", ok?

Just because you may type fast doesn't mean everyone does, especially if they have some handicap like vison or phyiscal.

I type: "abc"

Which of these should XY assume I want files starting with:
"abc"
"bc"
"c"

alps, how many letters of a searched name are you typing?

If you are used to type just the first letter, then I think I see what you mean. However, the reason for this delay is the fact that in XY (I am not sure how it is in other explorers) you can type a substring of a searched name (which - depending on settings - even need not be the beginning of the searched name.

Therefore, XY regards fast typed letters as one substring to be searched after. The longer (1 s, or so) pause is regarded as "Enter" for a substring being entered.

For me, for instance (= slow typer), the minimal pause length - as is now - is sometimes to short for instance.

I'm also a slow typist due to my vison issues so maybe this 'pause' value needs to be tweakable (if not already) so that for us in slow lane, it could be a bit longer and those in high speed lane, it could be 1/2 sec or so.

FYI, the delay is currently 750 ms (since 20090818, before it was 1000 ms).

Sure I could make it tweakable, but tweaks tweaks tweaks ... I think we should leave some tweakability with the user who can be expected to a smart animal able to adjust to the circumstances to some degree.

I too have been having frequent problems with the type ahead. Sometimes it's just not working at all. It's become so unreliable for me that I'm starting to rarely use it and instead fall back to the ">" alternative in the path bar, but that's more cumbersome. I don't have these problems with type ahead in other applications.
