XY will not start

When I tried to run XY I got the following error:

I then installed the latest version. Same result, except version number is 5.00.0050

I moved XYplorer.ini to another directory and XY then starts, and creates a new ini file.

Loaded a different ini file and XY worked with that ini file.

I'm going to investigate the original XYplorer.ini file to see if I can locate what is the problem. Any suggestions as to the cause?

O.K. I've found the lines in XYplorer.ini that cause the problem:

PanelHeight=462
PanelHeightJump=508

Changing them to:

PanelHeight=196
PanelHeightJump=0

which were the values in the ini file created after I had deleted the original ini file. It now loads the original XYplorer.ini file (with the two lines changed) and all appears to work correctly.

I didn't investigate if it's the "PanelHeight" or the "PanelHeightJump" that is the trouble (or both). I wasn't aware of any problems before I closed XY previously so how those values became changed to something that is, I assume, invalid I don't know.

Looking at the XY display I believe I had a file in Preview (or File View) when I closed XY. That file had then been deleted by another application before XY was opened again. Just tried to reproduce and no problem.

I've done a virus scan and all looks clean.

Very interesting because I had the same problem with my XY when i closed it in preview mode. I thought it was something to do with my OS or some virus thing and did not care to report. I backed up my xyplorer.ini and catalog.dat and uninstalled xy completely including deleting the folder. even after reinstall and putting my old .ini it did not work. I guess it was my old .ini which had the problem because once i got rid of it and installed everything new my XY booted up fine. Good that it works now and bad that my old ini wasnt usable.

Thanks for your investigation, Gandolf!! That was very helpful. Indeed I could reproduce the startup error and also add a fix. However, just like you, I could not reproduce the generation of this illegal value. (It's only PanelHeight=462 that causes the trouble.)

Glad to be of service! Thanks for the fix, it was rather disturbing to see the error at start-up.

Could it be related to the fact that PanelHeight=462 is greater than WinH=370? Since the XY window is maximised (display is 1024 X 768) the Info Panel can, I assume, be as high as 462 and still be valid. But a PanelHeight of 462 would not be valid if the XY window was normal, in my case 1024 X 370. Does XY load as a normal window and then change to the maximised state? If so could it have first read the info panel size in some way? Just ideas I was having.

By the way, I thought you were having a holiday!

Exactly! (Hey, you want to take over here? ) Here's how to reproduce it: small normal winstate, then maximize, enlarge panel to higher then normal winstate height, close app. On restart you get the error. The bug was born 20060526, and it left us today.

No thank you. 40+ years of programming is enough - I'm having a rest now but I still enjoy de-bugging other peoples programs. That way I find the problems, but they have to solve them!!

Here is what I wrote before I saw your reply, so we were both thinking along the same lines.

I can reproduce it reliably with the following:

Open XY maximised.
Open the Info Panel and re-size it to maximum or almost maximum.
Close XY.
Re-open it - well... try to!!

If I increase the normal window height, then I can close and re-open XY maximised with a larger Info Panel without any problem. With maximum normal window height (WinW=1024, WinH=742), XY window maximised and Info Panel maximised the error still occurs (PanelHeight=603). Reducing PanelHeight to 560 by modifying the ini file then XY starts O.K.

This would appear to confirm that the problem is the size of the Info Panel relative to the normal XY window size.

All may have been solved by your bug fix, but I'll give you the additional information anyway.

At 35°C currently and raising it's the _speed_ of thought that becomes so small that it's hard to measure. Whatever it is, at that speed even 8 days a week won't generate a feature tsunami.
