In most all cases, the base code needed for a tweak is added to INI when the INI is saved using the new vers of XY.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Unchecked nef from configuration images files and saved.
Edited config fig and added this snipper at the end (is that correct?)

;tweak insert to correct nef
DoPrevShell=dng.nef

saved file
restarted xyexplorer without saving
do not get 'bad image' but get nef icon but no thumbnail preview (win 7 64 doesn't read nefs, it seems)

No, not correct. Please read http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3543 again.

If Explorer does not show them XY has no chance either. The codec has to be there.

Have added codec and explorer can read nefs.

have added this tweek to the end of the config file, saved and restarted without saving.
config file still has tweak at end but still seeing nef icon and no thumbnail.

Is the position of the Tweak in the file important?

;tweak to force shell to see nefs
DoPrevShell=dng.nef

Hmm, why don't you simply follow the instructions? :)

Of course the position of the Tweak in the file is important...

Thanks but the reference given above tells what a tweak is and how to preserve it but gives no hint on understanding where it goes in the configuration file.

A link to a source that gives the layout of the config file and where to add tweak would be appreciated.

Ok, let me chime in and make it in simple words:

If a new tweak is added with a new beta, you have to update your installation to the new beta and (at least once) start XY and exit with saving in order to have the new key added to your ini.
Then you can edit the ini with whatever text editor outside of XY (meaning without XY running) to set that new tweak to your liking (hint: search for the keyword) and save the ini.

Now restart XY and enjoy your new settings...

Hope that solved some misunderstandings.
Ralph :)

What part of http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3543 is not clear? I really cannot think of a way to make it even more clear. :|

Well, I do know, just wanted to put it in slightly different words to possibly help in the matter.

And it will NOT until you have run 9.90.0403 or above at least once --and-- done a "Save All Settings" either explicitly or via "exit saving"...

You simply can NOT add it there yourself via edit, ok?
XY has to add the base entry which you then modify later.

The thread that Don gave you is quite clear, as is RalphM's post above so don't understand why you're having issues following these instructions.

Well, I was having problems because, until your post no one had mentioned this .

And it will NOT until you have run 9.90.0403 or above at least once --and-- done a "Save All Settings" either explicitly or via "exit saving"...

And my update check says that my current version 9.90.0401 is the current version.

I was not able to read the hive mind.

Well, while it's true 0401 is the current official vers but (most often) when we refer to "current vers" here, we are referring to beta which is now at 0403, ok? Ther can often be a GREAT difference between the two and that's why we ask that users supply the vers they have in posting problems to avoid this situation.

Given your join date in forum, I (for one) presumed you knew the difference...had your forum join date been very recent, since it is a typical issue that arises for new users, someone might have mentioned that sooner.
I was not able to read the hive mind.
That's fine...we just presumed you were on the matching beta when you're trying to use a feature introduced with that vers.
