This is the story:
Now I'm beginning to realize that I'm not at all sure that what I wrote above is true. I just realized that what I did was simply to change the default view. Maybe the lesson is that Autosize Columns can only be changed in default view and not with Folder View?Using folder views, I wanted certain folder, which was the home of a certain tab, to display columns of a certain size in list view. I spent ages toying with the View -> Columns, Tools -> Customize List, Folder views, and Set home commands, and going back to the Help file again and again.
What drove me crazy is that I could apparently do it for a while, or under certain circumstances, and then the default column size would set in again. For example, I could explore the folder and then return to the parent and see the same column size, but not when I browsed other folders and then used the Go Home command to return. Clicking on other tabs and then returning also seemed to work under different laws.
I eventually narrowed it down to the Autosize Columns command. My next problem was that I couldn't get the Autosize Columns command to uncheck for good. It would check itself back (though, again, not in a predictable fashion, which was what drove me crazy)! Until I finally realized that NOT ALL changes made to tab views while using Folder Views get saved, though SOME do. For example, if I click Folder Views and then change the view mode, that will be remembered. That's pretty much the point of this whole post. Remember that kiddies!
So I disabled Folder Views, made the changes I wanted (including unchecking autosize columns!), and then set Folder Views back on again.
I don't know, maybe this will be useful to another lost soul out there someday.
Thoughts would be appreciated.
