Hallgren:

Code: Select all

And remember that XY users are not likely to be as clueless as the avg user who clicks on anything...
AFAICT we were into similar divergence in the past, Hallgren. If I were the developer, I'd simply LOVE to have millions of clueless people using my products... without the bad publicity of my default settings exposing then to vulnerabilities for free.
And certainly not doing senseless (no offense, TheQwerty! I'm trying to take that as innocent humor...) things such
Maybe XYplorer should monitor everything I do and pop up a little animated character, perhaps a paperclip or a dog, that can provide me with some guidance and warn/prevent me from doing anything that might be dangerous.
and
Might as well just convert XYplorer to a single dialog: "The mere act of using a computer could lead to it being infected by a virus. To protect you XYplorer insists you turn your computer off and go outside."
.
I'm just proposing a safe scenario and a dialog on risks for the clueless I'd love to have as customers.

Not sure if it affects Win98 or ME but any NT based vers is definitely included...and I don't think M$ shows it but other sites did.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

"Idiots are like grass: they flourish everywhere", as a local writer said.
But I'd really don't want them to blame me for exposing them to anything... as I'd enjoy much more their greenies being thrown thru my Windows®!

Here's a simple solution if you don't want XY to preview dangerous formats: just disable those formats in Config | Previewed Formats and then it's just as you want.
-I'm aware of that, thanks. I'm just discussing newcomers and default settings... But thanks, users browsing this can also have a solution among the discussion of the problem, no matter how it ends.

XY users aren't ordinary users. Based on my experience with typical users, half of all Windows users don't know what Windows Explorer is when you tell them to open it. They only know to open "My Computer" and then if it's not an icon on the desktop, they don't EVER open it. Of the remaining half, 90% can barely navigate where they want to go. So I don't see an issue with protecting "ordinary" or new users.

I do see an issue of accidentally opening a preview of a compromised file. This can happen by opening the info panel when it was previously set to Preview, and therefore it automatically opens the selected file when the info panel is opened again. If its a really large file, like many megabyte TXT, is selected, XY will start to open it and it can take a long time to get back control. I could see XY being changed that when I am just opening the info panel, it opens some tab other than Preview.

I've had that mini-hang issue but having XY chg my tab when I close the IP isn't that great a solution either as I may be in Preview, close the IP temporarily, and then want to resume where I was so in that case, I want the Preview tab back just as I'd left it...

I don't think this is a great big deal, but it could be addressed perhaps by an choice under Advanced that says "When opening Info Panel, show (a) last used tab, (b) Properties, (c) Version, (d) Preview, (e) Raw, (f) Find Files, (g) Report. Or, "Do not start Info Panel in Preview mode" and use Properties. It only takes one click to go to Preview, so no big deal.
