Switch to Include/Exclude File Extensions on the Fly.

Post by SkyFrontier »

Can you think of an option to rename with or without file extension on the fly, something like F2 for one, CTRL+F2 for the other? - is there a script command that allows changing that option in config WITHOUT the need to restart XY...? (sometimes I need one or another, so many and so fast that changing thru config would be a hassle for sure...)

Thanks!

...make it a GUI toggle option?

...if you'd knew how much I suffered by not knowing about that...

Well. Better later than never. lol

Thank you. XY really makes file management a breeze! (except by my eternal complain... you already know what... :D )

...errr... is it possible to have the same effect with the opposite scenario than what currently is?

>default "exclude extension" is OFF: F2 2nd hit extends the renaming to the entire name. Ok.

>default "exclude extension" is ON: F2 2nd hit sends the caret to the right end of the file name; pressing F2 a 3rd time selects the entire file name.

For me the second option is the rule, and I'd love to keep it that way.

-That 3rd onwards could lead to a "exclude extension/include extension/go to end" cycle.

With all due respect... Why?!
I mean - I MISS this, I'm trying to get used to the opposite (as it currently is) and it's annoying, as I rarely (twice a day, to be precise - rare times I need it more) have to deal with extension exclusion. But twice a day EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DAY comes annoying, spending 12 or 14 hours a day in front of a PC. That's when those flying man and their marvelous file managers come to save the day...

You mean: F2,F2,F2,ESC,F2,... ?

SkyFrontier, I probably did not understand the proposal. Explain again, please.

I suspect what he's asking for is that F2 cycle thru the 3 possible states (include ext/exclude ext/go to end) repeatedly instead of what is now...

For ex, I have "exclude ext on Ren" checked and F2 for me doesn't allow me to get back to 'ext excl' IF I've hit F2 more than once...it just cycles thru 'full name sel' and 'go to end', so if I happen to hit F2 a 2nd time, I have to do ESC + F2 to get back to 'ext excl', ok?

And thus, the config opt would define what of the two selection states would be the starting point in the 3 state cycle...so it'd be: excl ext/incl ext/go to end -or- incl ext/excl ext/go to end
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Code: Select all

Config>General>Exclude Extension on Rename UNTICKED
.
Now, select a file:
1) Press F2 - the entire file name is on renaming mode;
2) F2 again - the file name only is selected on rename mode; extension excluded; (currently steps 1 and 2 are inverted)
3) F2 one more time - the cursor jumps to the end of the file name on renaming mode.
4) F2 - go to step 1.

Thanks for considering! That alone will help a lot, for currently inverting "exclude extension" does not impacts on steps 1 and 2 - but is a pain in real world usage.

:? Huh? You say steps 1 and 2 are now inverted? Not here...when the config opt is UNticked, it presently does:
1) Entire file name (incl ext) is selected
2) cursor goes to end of ext
3) go back to step 1

So what I'd want to see in this case is this revison :
3) only file name selected (excl ext)
4) go back to step 1.

And if the config opt IS ticked, then above steps 1 and 3 would be reversed...this gives all 3 options but just in a different order.

Don: What I see missing in "as is" which isn't ok to me: The lack of being able to get back to "file name sel (excl ext)" should one do a second F2 (without having to ESC)...you're stuck in a loop of "file name sel (incl ext)" and "cursor goes to end", which doesn't seem to respect the config setting where I've said to EXCLUDE ext on rename...I should have another chance to have ext excl without need to ESC and redo F2.

SkyFrontier: So how does my proposal differ from yours exactly? In as few words as possible, ok? Because your proposed step 2 which excludes ext is in total conflict with having config opt unticked...having that as step 3, yes...but not as step 2.

Yes, I just added this:

Code: Select all

    * List | Inline Rename. Now it's a three-step circle when you
repeatedly press F2 on a filename with extension.
        1) select, extension excluded
        2) select, extension included
        3) unselect, caret to end
With Configuration | General | Exclude extension on rename ON the
circle starts at 1), else at 2).

Not exactly as I'd wished but close enough for me! 8)
Gives me a chance for any of the 3 choices without use of ESC...Thanks!
