I've been using XYplorer for almost one month now.
Every couple of days I'm discovering new features which make my jaw drop, impressive features which I didn't even knew I bought.
It happens with only a very few pieces of software that I realize over time that I'm getting much more bang for the buck than I expected.
I thought about posting these thoughts about two weeks ago, when I discovered the Mini Tree, and in the meantime I've been customizing it further to my needs. I absolutely love the tagging, the highlighting, the filtering and scripting features, and what ultimately moved me to write this post was the html() function (not that it's something better than the other features).
It's the sum of all the little amazing details which make this software a little piece of art, as if someone had dedicated his entire life towards creating, using and improving it. The way this software works is totally on my wavelength, I'm starting to cherish it like no other.
I'm seriously thinking about buying a copy for my parents, who even after 15 years of using Windows don't realize what a C: drive is, where I strip away all the advanced features and set it up in such a minimal fashion so that they will be able to use it as their entry point to their filesystem. With a backed up .ini file in case they mess things up.
Yesterday I installed TotalCommander for a test, since it's getting such good reviews, and I was amazed at how people can call that a perfect explorer replacement, XYplorer is worlds ahead those "Commanders". I also use xplorer2 since I bought a license over a year ago, but now I've got it in a toolbar button in XYplorer, just in case I want to launch a stripped down explorer window containing a copy of the active folder.
I'm also totally ok with it not having a FTP component in it, since winscp is already perfect match for this task.
There are about three things I'd like to see changed, but I will post on them individually. In short, they are copying files via drag and drop appears to locks up the software until the files are copied, a small improvement in drag and dropping files into the tab menu (which doesn't but should pop up when hovering over it), and the ability to have the tree and the catalog side by side in order to take advantage of the full height on both panes.
Kind regards,
Daniel
I'm speechless, it's amazing!

Hi Daniel,
Thanks, glad you like it!
Keep on spreading the word.
Conc. "copying files via drag and drop appears to locks up the software until the files are copied", it might be time for you to discover yet another nice feature: Configuration | File Operations | Enable background processing.

Hi Don,
nice to hear from you. Regarding the background thing, I have that enabled.
But when I drag and drop a file from one of the two panes to outside of XYplorer onto the desktop (or windows explorer), if I then click on the XYplorer window, I get a popup telling me:
This action cannot be completed because a component (Program Manager) is not responding
..blabla..
[Switch To...] [Retry]
So I'm unable to use the drop target (ie select any file on the desktop) as well as XYplorer.
The same goes the other way around, when I drag and drop a file from the desktop into a XYplorer Pane. In that case I don't get a popup, but clicking on on the desktop or XYplorer has no effect, they are both locked up.
It may be that background operations work ok when they are only performed between the two panes, but that is definitely not enough. I really don't get it, I mean since you are using an external tool, I don't know, maybe you are not finishing the DND operation properly before starting that external copy process.
Another bug is that it is not possible to DND from the desktop onto the inactive pane, this is not consistent with the behaviour that it's ok to DND from the active pane to the inactive pane. So to do a DND from the desktop, you first need to abort your DND, activate the pane, and then restart the process; that's not ok.
(Sure, that excerpt is totally ok, I really meant what I said...)
Kind regards,
Daniel
