Yes, I was able to see thumbnails of D700 NEFs since starting to use XYplorer

Went back a few years, can't see D200 NEFs either.

No, let's forget it. The hope is extremely small anyways. "Cannot decode" is "Cannot decode".

OK, that worked. Got the NEF. But: works fine! No problem to decode.

Reinstalled program. No luck.
Downloaded no-install version, same issue - cannot decode

I'm at a loss here.
I've no idea what to do now.

What OS?

Download a prior version from the freezer to verify if it really worked before 9.20.

I set up my previous PC running XP and version 8.6 ran fine.
I downloaded 6 versions as far as 7.7 on my new Win 7 64 bit machine and none of the version viewers work for my NEF files.

I can work around it by shooting both nef and jpg but it is a colossal pain.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Just checked and can confirm "Cannot decode" for NEF on Win 7 64 bit. No idea why Win7 ('s gdiplus) is falling back against XP and I cannot do anything here. You might try to find a 3rd party shell extension for NEF thumbnails (and take care to install the 32bit version along with the 64bit version).
