Re: Freeze and max CPU % when clicking box in "Preview Formats"

Does XYplorer use some kind of special windows components with the preview system? I've tried starting all the services that I had on manual, like desktop window manager etc. but no change.
No, XY uses nothing special whatsoever (it's in that sense a very basic Windows app that even runs under Win95). And these lists have nothing to do with the preview proper. These are just normal lists that appear in many places in XY. Assuming that you don't have this issue with any other list I'm asking myself what might be special in these lists. And, of course, it does not make things easier that you seem to be the only one having this problem. Tricky...

I have now systematically gone through every item in all of the xyplorer menus and clicked everywhere around, no freeze issue anywhere, only preview formats window.

I was able to reproduce the same problem on another machine with different hardware but same windows version (from same install disc) and some same software, so it can't be a hardware issue.

Could it possibly be some kind of copy protection thing? Does XYplorer check serial etc when clicking on some windows etc? I have a very long name (19 letters) and this has caused problems with one software license where the long name created some kind of invalid serial number? Probably not but it's an idea.

Nope, definitely not.

If you can reproduce the same problem on another machine with different hardware then I'm really buffled why nobody else can. Could your download have been corrupted?

I was able to reproduce it on my laptop, too, after downloading a fresh copy. It must be the tweaked windows installation. I will reinstall windows on my laptop with a normal DVD and see if it works. It probably will work but it would be nice to know exactly what is causing this.

I was again able to reproduce the problem on a second laptop with Windows Vista SP2 which was tweaked by vlite (much more reliable than RT lite 7 but still of course unofficial tweaking). Very, very strange

Could you please try to click in the upper list in the Action Log (to check whether this crashes as well). This is the only other place (I think) where mouse down in one list triggers a refilling of another list. And this is the only thing (I see at the moment) that is different here from all other lists.

OTOH, if you get the crash even when clicking "Text Files" then there is no filling of another list -- damn, I probably should delete this post right away, but I leave it. Who knows...

Other idea: What if you focus the upper list using the TAB key instead of clicking into it?

Action log does not freeze.

Using TAB instead of mouse in preview formats also freezes.

I looked at my tweak logs and noticed that I had removed this windows program from the installation DVD:
"Default Computer Program Access"

Description:
Set Program Access and Computer Defaults makes it easy for you to change the default program used for certain activities, such as web browsing, sending email, playing audio and video files, and using instant messaging.

Could the absence of this program be reason for the freeze maybe? Although it is strange that just clicking on the list is the instant cause of freezing.

Anyway, I am now installing a new version of W7 with tweaks that cannot possibly have anything to do with this (like MS paint and Windows Movie Maker, I hate these bloat softwares), so hopefully it will work.

Case solved.

I made the other tweaked install DVD with RT 7 lite almost exactly like before but left the "Default Computer Program Access" accessory in place. Everything works normally now, no freeze.

Good, but also frightening that such things can cause a freeze.

The same problem.
Windows 7 x64 English (installed from original Microsoft DVD image), no tweaking software in system.

You did try the latest beta version?

Also, earlier in this thread a whole bunch of troubleshooting steps were given. Did you try those and if not, could you?

Beta version doesn't solve this problem

I was exaggerating a bit...

Could you try running XYplorer with the default config? The easiest way is to copy XYplorer.exe to an empty folder and run it from there.
