Please put the submenus back under the View Menu

Post by Mesh »

In regards to this:

Code: Select all

v8.40.0111 - 2009-09-25 14:59
      - Moved the following submenus from menu View to menu Tools:
          Tree Style
          List Style
          Size Column Format
          Date Column Format
Reason: These are mostly "Set And Forget" options that belong to
the configuration department (traditionally located under menu
Tools) rather than the View department. Others (e.g. Sticky
Selection) have not much to do with "View".

... I would like to request that you please put those items back on the View menu. They don't belong on the Tools menu. They rightfully adjust *view* settings, and that is where people expect to find them. Justifying it by saying that they are "set and forget" items is irrelevant. You can say the same thing about "Default Tab", "Set Home", "Columns", "Auto-Refresh", "Show Items", etc...

It has nothing to do with the frequency of use. They are items that fall within the purview of "View" settings, and it doesn't make sense to put them in any other menu. Right now, XY feels like one of those sliding square puzzles that's been scrambled. :)

I had to make a change to one of these settings recently and had forgotten that they had moved and thus had to think: where are they?...but...I also know that by moving them, the View menu got reduced to a more manageable length and thus made accessing the remaining options quicker/easier...so I see it as a toss-up as to what is better overall.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Shorter doesn't matter if items are not where they belong. Otherwise, you might as well just have "Menu 1", "Menu 2", "Menu 3", etc... A item that controls the view settings belongs under the View menu. The menu length should not factor into this.

Is *that* where the damned things went? I upgraded XY a few days ago, and when I couldn't find the settings where they belonged, I figured that XY was broken. I just didn't have the time to look into it further.

They definitely belong under the View menu. Where they are now just doesn't make any sense.

I'm very pleased with the new position and think they totally belong there.

But I'm curious for other opinions...

I did not realize this until now as I hardly use the menu (Thanks to CKS, Toolbar, Catalog). But I too think those items belong to "View" rather than "Tools" menu. If you are worried about space in views menu, maybe you can condense the:

Code: Select all

Tree Style
List Style
Size Column Format
Date Column Format
into sub-menus:

Code: Select all

Style
    Tree
    List
Column Format
    Size
    Date
My 2 cents.

I found the new positions to be non-intuitive as well. For me, it's not a big deal since I now know where to find them. However, to make it more intuitive for someone new to XY, I would recommend putting them back under the View menu.

I think this is a very good idea and makes it a bit cleaner as well, and given the frequency of use, shouldn't be an issue to have as sub-menus.

I would be amenable to that.

No folks, let stop this now. It's decided and on we go.

I don't understand. I thought you wanted to hear more opinions?

I took your comment to mean that you wanted to hear opinions of additional people. In any case, people's opinions on this is either going to be that they think it's a good idea, or they think it's a poor one. There's not much more variety. :)

And so far, it seems like there's a clear consensus on this. <duck>

As did I, which did occur as there were two other users (avsfan & serendipity) who initially responded only after Don's request, and one of those presented a revised idea to futher improve it which the original requestor was satisfied with.

We now have a total of 5 regular users who agree, and while that is a small minority of total users, maybe does represent a fair portion of the heavy forum users...
