(Actually, just testing this it looks like only column Name has tooltip when data isn't fully shown, maybe this should be added for all columns ?)
Was planned anyway (at least for comments).

apologies if this has already been addressed, but why only 7 possible tags? I didn't realize it until today when I saw the "new" button grayed out under tags configuration.

Well, actually, there are 8, as null is one choice...so I suspect it may be some coding thing as that's a total of 3 bits binary.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Because I just love to patronize my users: It's better for you!

Seriously, I could raise the limit at any time by changing a single value. I just wanted to start with a controlled situation. I could theoretically support billions of different labels without a millisecond loss in performance, but the menu would look a little strange then...

BTW, this feature is also available on MacOS and there it's also just seven colors, so it must be good.

How many would you need then?

I don't yet need them in the near future, but I could see it going to 15/16 without too much impact on menus...and I think that is the typical color choice limit in primitive color pickers.

Update: 15/16 means 15 colors in addition to null, therefore 16 choices.

15/16 seems to me enough reasonable also.

Depending on your needs, the Comments field might be the better choice for you.

I see the Tags field mostly as a color label. And I think 7 colors are easily distinguished and recognized even without any of the other colors in the same context for comparison. If you have more colors it's becoming more difficult. "Is this now the dark yellow or the bright orange?..." I mean, okay, 16 would work, but there's a limit coming pretty soon.

BTW, binary numbers do not matter here. I could just as well have 10 or 23 tag schemes.

Yes, I agree. But here is what I project for my uses, and why 16 tags are not too much : you said recently that "One tag column is enough. Keep it simple. But I want to use several categories of tags, e.g. one serie A "Urgent, Done, ToDo, Too late", another B "Very good, Good, Bad, Very bad", another C "Windows, Linux, OSX, Other", and finally D "Shareware, Freeware, Open Source, DonationWare". Those are just examples. I am not yet sure of my choices. But with 16 tags, I can use serie A in my folder "Documents", B in folder "Games", C in folder "ProgsToInstall" and finally D in folder "ListOfGreatProgs".
In this case I can even assign the red color to the first tag of each serie, green for the second, and so on. 4 colors are sufficient, but with different significations depending on folder. Also I can use tag label instead of tag color.

Of course Comments are very useful for many cases. But here, just to choose in a list is pleasant instead of enter a comment by hand.

Ok, I think about allowing some more.

Here's a question conc. language. I used "Violet" and "Grey" but now I see that in Mac OS they use "Purple" and "Gray". What's better now? (Sure I like Jimi Hendrix...)

I believe "Gray" is a more American spelling, so I'd say use "Grey" to appeal to you foreigners better. :P

Violet and Purple are two different colors, so I'd suggest going with the web colors definitions and whichever is closest to the color you've used.

And I really think you need to make use of PapayaWhip.

Looks like "Purple" is the cover term so I take it (the closest is "DarkOrchid" holy crap). And I always liked "grey" better so I keep it.

I suggested 16 as it's the nbr of colors as defined in HTML color names as shown on that wiki page, plus it's also the nbr of choices in "custom color" within 'color picker' and as stated, it's one of the typical minimal choices given by some forums/software.

I wasn't going to be using the color only, but a very short (maybe 4 char?) label as well, so the tag field is ideal for this...and it then also allows me to use the comment for other descriptions of the file, for ex.

And on the gray/grey thing? I've gotten so used to seeing both so it doesn't even matter to me now...I would use purple as it's the HTML name.

Next version will allow 16 colors and has purple. :)

I had fun reading all those, especially the papayawhip. I am glad we dont have to deal with such exotic ones. 16 sounds good, i am sure to avoid the hot pink or fuc?sia.
