Along with the current filtering features , there could also be a filter on the fly.
There could be a small text box where users can type in the files to be found with a particular text in there name in the current directory.
For eg
There is a wallpaper folder with 1000's of files.
Contains jpg , bmp , png etc.
so just typing *.jpg will filter all the jpg files in the current directory on the fly.
Not just restricted to extensions could be any text in the file name.
I know we already have filtering , but this is filtering on the fly with the help of a small text box.
the text box could be placed anywhere in the "List panel"

Re: Filtering files on the fly
you can use the quick visual filter.
using your exemple, just enter this in the address bar:
to toggle the filter off enter only a pipe (i.e. the same as b4, without *.jpg), or use the toolbar button.

And don't forget about filtering based on the currently selected extension(s)! Via mouse, right-click on the Visual Filter TB and you can either include just those or exclude those...handy to find all EXE if you're already pointing at one in list.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
