XYplorer hangs on video directory

Post by scrotty »

XYplorer v6.80.0098

I have a directory that's full of my ripped DVDs. It's around 15GB in size of 40 files: half jpeg dvd cover art, half avis.

I have XYplorer's preview turned off and am not showing the Info panel. When I show any view that contains thumbnails, XYplorer freezes up when I'm viewing the contents of that directory. The freezes last around 10-15 seconds and sometimes things freeze up again while still viewing the same directory.

Does this make any sense?

Thanks!
Sean

Is this problem only in v6.80.0098 or you had same problems before? Have totried with the newest version?

I have previewed movies before with my hard disk full of avis and have not seen that problem. cant remember what version it was. Seems like this is the first time this issue has been reported. btw, XY uses windows media player to preview movies.
what happens when you play those movies directly in windows media player? also note that broken codecs can cause unexpected problems, check them too.

I noticed it in the current (non-beta) release of XYplorer too. The movies are XVID, but I have that codec and they all play just fine in Windows Media Player.

I should add that I'm running Vista.

Thanks for the response, Serendipity! :)

I get this as well. Video files (XviD, DivX, .vob, .evo) seem to cause this problem. 64bit Vista here, and it happens even when the computer is doing nothing else.
Used to update to the latest beta every day. Now I have children instead…

I think I just ran into this when I didn't even have a thumbnail view on - it was just "details". This is beginning to look like another Vista/XYplorer issue.

Please be more exact:

- thumbnails on or off?
- at which point exactly does it freeze?

I can't reproduce it in the non-thumbnail case.

In the thumbnail case I haven't figured out any sort of trigger that is causing the freeze yet. It sometimes freezes every couple seconds when I click from item to item in the directory - other times doing that exact same thing causes no problems (for the several seconds I play with it).

I'll post a follow-up if I can find a trigger.

It might be the File Info Tips. Please uncheck them in Configuration | File Info Tips | (first option).

So it looks like I have to provide a way to exclude certain file types from file info tipping...

Will Explorer show file info tips for those files without problem?

Okay, I see where you are going with this. And it definitely seems that it's the file info tip for my .avi files that is causing the problem.

Every time I hover over an avi, XYplorer freezes up. When it un-freezes I have to jiggle the mouse a bit and then the file tip shows up. But if I move the mouse away from the tip and immediately go back to try to get it to show up again - another freeze occurs.

Hovering over the .jpgs in the same folder properly shows the file info tip and shows it without freezing up.

Explorer _does_ show file info tips for my .avis in that directory without freezing up. But as you can see below, the amount of info it shows is much less than what XYplorer is (trying to) show.

Explorer's file tips show this for one of my .avis:
Type: Video Clip
Size: 816 MB
Length: 01:25:16

And the same file with XYplorer:
Name: Lilo and Stitch (2002)
Size: 816 MB
Type: Video Clip
Date modified: 3/22/2008 1:30 PM
Date created: 3/21/2008 8:52 PM
Date accessed: 3/21/2008 8:52 PM
Attributes: A
Perceived type: Video
Owner: [excised for privacy]
Kinds: Video
Rating: Unrated
Length: 01:25:16
Bit rate: 128kbps
Len (Full Path): 26 (63) characters

Thank you for the details. I'm going to research this.

In the meantime you should make use of two settings (if you have not done yet) that are there only to workaround this issue. In Configuration | File Info Tips:
Show tip only When Hovering File Icon: if checked, File Info Tips will pop up only when you move the mouse over a file's icon (not the filename).
Initial Delay msec: time in milliseconds between mouseover and popup. Valid values are from 0 thru 9999. (I use 800 msecs myself)

EDIT: You might also play with the File Info Tip Fields and see which one is causing the delay.

I played with the list of shown file info tips and have come to this conclusion (I think):

1) There is no single smoking gun attribute - as more attributes are included to be displayed, the delay increases.

2) During this delay (presumably while XYplorer is looking up data) XYplorer becomes unresponsive. In Vista this unresponsiveness manifests itself in getting a "wait" cursor and a "Not Responding" label appended to the XYplorer title bar. (These, only if I click in the XYplorer window while it's assembling the file info. If I just let XYplorer alone, it's not visually obvious that anything is wrong - other than it takes longer to show the file info compared to a jpeg file.)

As a programmer myself (but one who has never worked with VB), I would hazard that file info retrieval is happening on the main application thread. If it's possible to push that work to another thread that alerts the main thread when it has completed may solve the problem.

That said, this isn't a big deal for me since I don't need the file info tip. Turning it off in the configuration works fine for me. But, I realize, that might not be a satisfactory solution to you or others. :)

Thanks for your analysis. (And I fully agree with your conclusion.)

I've been experiencing this for a while and just now decided to search the bug forum for it and happened upon this topic. Was there ever an updated fix beyond disabling file info tips? Thanks.
