Yes, this appears to be a possible solution to me. Although it might lead to unexpected events when you go to a not-remembered folder only after a long row of remembered ones. And there's also this problem which I also mentioned in another post some minutes ago: you go to a remembered folder, then you manually change the settings (another view, sort order, visible columns), then you go to a non-remembered folder: all your manual changes are lost when it auto-applies the the "previous" attributes! I think this would be a dramatic change in XY's long-standing browsing behavior. It's okay when the settings magically change when I tell them to do (via FSS), but it's not okay when they change if I do not tell them to change!

I guessing that might be intended, since it's a "special" column (can't be moved or resized, etc) but I think that's still odd, from a user POV, since Columns Visibility is supposed to be remembered.
Sure thing. I just forgot about it.

But this is standard XY behavior ever since! Whether you manually set thumbnail mode or, since today, whether FSS does it: it stays until you change it.
With the FSS feature I expected one important change in the way how XY deals with folders.

Do you plan to implement this?

Well, it is already implemented! :) But of course it is optional (and I know I won't use it). I just have to add the interface for you to make it available. Tomorrow...

I disagree here. I mean, given how we were on a FSS folder it makes sense to me :
- I go to a folder with FSS, including Thumb mode
- I change the sort order or something
- I go to another (non-FSS) folder : I surely expect to go back to "default FSS" or "previous settings", but not stay in Thumb mode just because I change the sort order !!

I think all folders using a default FSS or having a main FSS for everything may have one big flaw : if you change a sort order and move to any other folder (non-FSS), then the sort order is "undone" as the default/main FSS is loaded.

Which is why the concept of restoring the previous non-FSS settings might be the best : going to a folder,
- if it's FSS then load settings,
- if not, then if we were on FSS before we revert to last (non-FSS) settings (previous ones), if we weren't FSS we do nothing, keeping settings that may have been changed / do not have to be default/main FSS

Couldn't this default settings issue kind of be arranged the same way PFA is, in that it would use the first match?

Then you could define different settings for:
*\Images\*
*\My Documents\*
*

Then the default behavior of carrying over settings from the current tab could remain and anyone wanting a different default could just define that wildcard-only FSS?

A question: Do you plan to have an auto-save feature where user's previous settings are saved when he/she changes location from a FSS folder or do you expect user to save his/her setting before changing location?
If you plan an auto-save thing, How much will it affect the XY's memory usage and speed?

Well sure, that's exactly how I implemented it. You just cannot try it yet because I did not have the time to add the interface where you can define those wildcard patterns! :P Sorry for the torture...

No, I did not plan this. However, adding this would not be notable in memory and speed. I could even add it on a per-FSS-folder basis. But I first want to finish the original plan. Then, after you have seen it all, we can talk about elaborating the idea somewhat.

i like the TheQwertys approach (which was already somehow confirmed by Don that it will be possible via "Customize..." dialog): Define a "*"-folder at the bottom of the list so that every folder that does not match a previous entry will inherit this "standard" mode.

This way literally every folder will have a FSS-match.

However, what happens if you do not specify such "*"-entry? Here, jackys approach comes into play:

I know: I'd like that.

Not perfect, but would do. I'll think about it.

"TheQwertys approach"... ? If you read today's change log you will see that it's "Don's approach"! :P

Not a true bug, but maybe a bit of missing info: In Change Log about FSS, there should (IMO) have been a minor reference to new option "File > Settings > Save FSS" which is required to make it work fully...Ok, so it's likely obvious to 99% of the users, but one never knows...

Thus, there isn't any software bug here but a written bug, in that doc's are not fully complete and could lead user to forget that this step is needed as it is for other similar .DAT files.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
