When reporting a bug, please include the following information: your XYplorer version (e.g., v27.90.0047), your Windows version (e.g., Win 11), and your screen scaling percentage (e.g., 125%). We recommend adding your Windows version and screen scaling percentage to your profile or signature. This will make debugging much easier for us.

I get the dialog that says something about sorry xyplorer has a fatal error and needs to close. it offers to let me debug, but that is unlikely to do me any good, plus it happens at the most inconvient times when i really dont have time to look at it anyway.
What can I look for the next time it happens to help investigate the problem.

1. Operating System? 32-bit/64-bit?dgw wrote:I get the dialog that says something about sorry xyplorer has a fatal error and needs to close. it offers to let me debug, but that is unlikely to do me any good, plus it happens at the most inconvient times when i really dont have time to look at it anyway.

2. Screenshot of the error message?
3. Actions taken that result in a crash?
4. Software that's running at the same time?
In my experience, fatal error messages are often a result of something murky happening on the OS level, but this is not always 100%. Aforementioned info should help narrowing things down

You can generally select the text on an error dialog box and do a Cntl+C to get it on clipboard so it can be pasted here...
Also, if it crashes really hard, you can usually find a "Dr. Watson" log and dump in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson or similar...in the ".log", one can find clues that are helpful to Don...I've emailed it to him by request on occasion.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

The easy stuff:
Windows XP SP2, 32 bit
I'll get a screen shot next time it happens. i just installed this version yesterday and its happened 2 or 3 times.
Action-closed the warning dialog, XYplorer terminated, I restarted it.
Software running-IE6, Word 2003, Outlook 2003, Commence, CyberArmor, McAfee, KatMouse, and a bunch of other stuff, this is a corporate laptop full of security software.
I searched the HD using X1 but cant find any Dr watson logs. X1 was not running when the crash occured.
If I remember right, XYplorer is written in VB6. I have Visual Studio 6 and VS 2008 on this PC. If I fire up the debugger, is there anything I can look for that might help?

I recently had an error while starting XY. The error read something like "cannot find about:blank" and clicking that gave an error (which i dont remember). But Xy was working alright, only when I restart XY i had this problem.
This happened few times until i restarted my PC and then it stopped. So I knew it was my PC and not XY. I still wonder what it was though. This happened prior to 7.30 though.

Don't bother about DrWatson or Debugger -- they won't help.dgw wrote:The easy stuff:

The best is to find a way to reproduce it. And a system reboot is always good, because more than once such an error was related to a Windows Update that was not fully completed.

"Reproduce it". That will be an interesting exercise. It has suprised me every time, and right now I don't remember what I was doing. I am reasonable sure though that I was doing something in another application, not XY. Also, if it provides any clues, I don't remember this happening in 7.20.admin wrote:Don't bother about DrWatson or Debugger -- they won't help.

That's just the generic error display...what happens when you click on the "click here" link? And/or the "debug"?
BTW, if the image (JPG) is stored on a site like PhotoBucket, you can use the 'IMG' tags to embed it here or a clickable thumbnail of it, but I'm not sure if you can embed it from Picassa Web.

Yes, but it's not really the error message itself that would really be helpful, but a way to reproduce it. If you could give us instructions of what to do to reproduce it, if we knew what is causing it, then we could all, well, wait for Don to go back to work and fix itdgw wrote:here is the dialog box with the message. i dont know how to make it display here. So far we have no idea of what's causing this, that's the problem. For example, if it always happened when using right-click on a file or folder, it could come from a (badly written/buggy) shell extension (that adds item to the context menu)...
If it always happens when XY isn't even active/focused, so not doing anything, then it's really hard to tell what could possibly by causing this...

its happened again with version 7.4.00001. i had a great writeup describing the problem, error dialogs and so on, and IE went wonky on me and wiped it out before i could send it. BAH! Essentially, I right clicked a file on a USB stick and selected the Delete option from the menu. It happened twice in a row, then the third time the file was deleted.

So did you check about 3rd party shell extensions in your right click menu?dgw wrote:its happened again with version 7.4.00001. i had a great writeup describing the problem, error dialogs and so on, and IE went wonky on me and wiped it out before i could send it. No. Give me a little more information about what you mean or what you are looking for.
