Big problem! no multiple instances possible

Post by itsme28m »

Hi,

Today i wanted to do some cleanup of the hard drives, and i needed multiple instances, with the new version i can't let it work whatever i do.

I changed the option to allow multiple instances, closed xyplorer, opened it again, the option was not saved.

I changed the option again, did a file, settings, save configuration, closed and opened xyplorer and it was still not enabled after i reopened xyplorer.

I tried it with editing the configuration file, closed and reopened xyplorer, didn't work either.

Also, there are a few things that could improve xyplorer that i noticed while working a little more with it:

- Find files template -> make an option to load or not load the name of the file you want to search
- make it possible in one search, to include subfolders in one drive, but exclude subfolders in another drive. For now i think you can only give for example F:\; H:\; G:\ as the location and it searches for all drives in all subfolders, or no subfolders but there is no way in between... it would take much less time for me if i could seperate this into one search.

- And the most important! an option to make it stop to search again after you clicked the search results tab again! Isn't this possible yet? i couldn't find it how, couldn't find an option and couldn't find it in the help, the only thing in the help file i could find was that this behaviour is how xyplorer works... but for me it was not good at all today, i just needed the results list with a few other tabs, constantly checking from the results between the other tabs and that was not a good feeling that it always searched again. I really hope there will come an option to turn this off. I wanted to solve this with opening another instance of xyplorer but that didn't work either... so i had much of work what could be done much faster without these troubles.

Not complaining of xyplorer in general.... if i only had the default file manager in windows it would take days, not an hour, i think.

Greetings,

Steve

Take a look at these other threads about this:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1796
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=945
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=2456

The use of catalog to 'hold' results may be a interim solution.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Those posts are more for caching search results. That's not what i need. Caching has other advantages but mostly i don't need it, if i install windows for example i turn every form of caching of because it slows down the general work of your pc because of the caching.

For xyplorer the caching would be better because it would take less time to cache a list then all files on the hard drive togheter. I know some programs that had bugs because of the cache within windows, i didn't have those problems because i always turn cache functions off

The only thing that i want is that it freezes the list (or how should i say that...).

The advantage to freeze a list is always better then cache the list, 85% of the time i search for something else, i would have many different cached versions of search lists that i mostly don't use anymore, every cache more saved maybe means less responsive reaction of the search function. It will be good for some of us, but freezing the list should also be available. Like "View", "Auto-refresh", that command also for the search list?

Anyway, a solution for me was to open another instance of xyplorer just for the searching work, but it's not possible anymore on my side and i can't seem to make it work to enable the option to make multiple instances possible. Others that have this problem to or any solution for this till it's possible to freeze the list?

Greetings,

Steve

See my post in your other thread: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=2467

Update: Note to Don: So where is the "Allow multiple instances" switch stored? I compared two INI's with it on/off and they show no diff! Yes, I found the "AlwaysNewInstance" but without the other setting, it seems that one cannot get more than two XY sessions running...if anyone can, I can't seem to do so!

The second session has the "Allow" set off always, even with same INI used for both. :?
I'm using 7.20.01 beta for this test.

It seems i had an older version still installed, 6.80.0000, under xyplorer-01.

Maybe i can do it with that version for a while, however, i have to open the second xyplorer from the first opened xyplorer till the fix comes :p

There doesn't seem to be a "Allow multiple instances" switch. But i tried to change the AlwaysNewInstance but it made no difference.

This is so weird... i tried a few other things... enabled "Allow multiple instances" with open new instance always... then switched off the setting to save settings, closed and reopened, then did thesame again but switched on the setting to save settings (maybe there went something wrong with that setting, i know such things are possible so swithed it of and on again.). That didn't help either.

Then, i didn't close xyplorer with the X, but i went to file, exit (saving) and restarted xyplorer (while the setting was enabled to allow multiple instances, i double checked this that it was enabled before exiting).

I reopened xyplorer... again... not possible to reopen a second xyplorer of the new version!

Edit: the setting to allow multiple instances was not there in the older version either, so i gues it's not a ini file setting but something internal to xyplorer? however, in the older version it works ok, in the new version it doesn't work with me anymore. Maybe it's related to another setting i have that you don't have? Maybe Don knows what setting can cause this.

I posted this in the Wishes topic Single instance and am dual posting it here to complete the chain.
j_c_hallgren wrote:Hey all: We've now got competing dual threads about the same issue so given that it seems there are some issues with this option, let's consolidate this 'single instance' discussion into the Bug Reports thread at Big problem! No multiple instances possible

BTW, I also was unable to locate any INI setting that relates to "Allow Multiple Instances" specifically so where it's hiding, I'm not sure.

Addendum: Totally :? now! I can't get dual instances to work now, yet I had it working an hour ago!

:D I just found a simple work-around that just allowed me to open four XY sessions as a test!

I just did a "File>Settings>Create shortcut to this config" and then by using that shortcut which, by default, has a "/ini=xyplorer" switch that thus overrides any single/multiple settings.

This is based on 7.10.0047 notes:

Code: Select all

* Configuration | Startup & Exit | "Allow multiple instances": Note that if you use a switch in the command line (either /ini or /win) then you will ALWAYS get a new instance EVEN if "Allow multiple instances" is OFF. This is necessary from the programmatical POV, and I think it also makes sense from the user POV.

j_c_hallgren, many thanks, that works!!!!!!!!!!!!

You made my day! :D

Again, many thanks!

Edit: allow multiple instances is still switched off, but your solution can open multiple instances anyway even if it's switched off and can't be switched on again, great find! :D

BINGO!! That totally passed my mind. I had a /ini switch and no way to have single instance in that case.
Thanks JC. :D , Now i know why you spend way too much time here.

:D Glad to be of help to both of you! Sorry I didn't think of that sooner, but I just took a look at my blog and there it was!
Also, having to convert the change logs to blog format means that I tend to have to look at them closely at least once...but will I remember it later? Maybe...maybe not.
