Speed up custom icons/colours (on network drives)

Post by daniel_m »

Yes, another request for those pesky network drives

The possibility to have custom icons for e.g. empty folders is great and working very well on local drives. On network drives, folders with many subfolders are very sluggish until XYplorer has checked all those folders for subfolders. Any file/folder changes like creating a new folder make XYplorer freeze until, I guess, it finished checking for empty subfolders again.

Could navigating network drives be sped up by (1) executing Custom File Icons / Color Filters in the background and possibly showing an animated "busy" icon somewhere in the status line, (2) caching the result of Custom File Icons / Color Filters and updating them in the background when switching tabs, and (3) continue executing Custom File Icons / Color Filters until everything is scanned even when the user is not scrolling and many objects are currently out of view?

At least one thing is probably already possible: In the Custom File Icons dialog click the Configuration button in the mini toolbar and untick "Check Network Locations for Content-Based Folder Icons" .

Yeah, the problem there is ... that I kind of like to use that feature on my network drive too, because it is very useful!

All that background stuff will come with multi-threading in the future.

Is this future as close as fusion power?
Just kidding, XYplorer was centuries ahead of any other file explorer already a century ago.
Okay, no stupid jokes this time: I could not live without XYplorer and am looking forward to the things to come, whenever that will be.

Multi-threading is a planned feature of twinBasic. It might come pretty fast.
