Script for Filter by Filetype

I want to add a button on my toolbar so that by clicking it, I can filter the files for say JPG or PDF files. Is there any ready script or any help?

Thanks, Jupe - this is (yet another) (prominent) XY feature which has been staring me in the face for years but which I'd forgotten the use of.
