Favorites Pull Down Menu

Post by nogenius »

The Favorites Pull Down Menu i.e. amongst the ones right at the top of the program reading left to right File, Edit, View, Go, Favorites etc

You click on it to e.g. say - change set highlight color... and there is a problem.

You click on it and as soon as you start to drag downwards with the mouse the long list of folders you have recently been using shows up.

What is happening is there is no delay. This means it is impossible to access the other functions in this menu.

By the way - all the other ones operate as they should. It is just the Favorites. Something seems to have gone wrong with providing a short delay before things happen.

Cannot reproduce. I can move the mouse down pretty slowly over Favorites | Favorite Folders without the "Favorite Folders" submenu being opened. Is that what you mean?

I click on Favorites and immediately you get the list of folders - in my case a big long list. I mean it is impossible to get to the other stuff in this menu. No; I don't pause so as to activate the right-pointing arrow (triangle shape).

The issue is, unless I am extremely lucky by going at high speed and I do mean high speed - then I cannot access the other functions in the menu. I have even tried to 'scan' slightly leftwards with the mouse and also rightwards on several other attempts. Neither 'method/technique' helps.

I discovered this yesterday when I wanted to set highlight color. I couldn't believe it was not working and so tried for a long time thinking it was me at fault.

I put a button in the toolbar - the ones supplied within the program and via customize toolbar... This operates slightly better but you still need to be fairly fast to access the other features of this menu. In essence, this is still a sort of 'gamble' as to how it will work.

All the other menus just have that slight delay so you can mouse downwards, i.e. 'scan down' until you reach the function you want.

In other words, all of the other menus work exactly as anyone would expect them to within a program. It is just this one menu that is not behaving correctly. You have be lightening fast to get past the folder listing in here and with luck reach the item you do want. In my case yesterday it was set highlight color.

I know it seems a crazy problem and I thought it was strange when the other menus worked correctly. And I have never had this issue before.

I hope I have explained this better in this reply. If not, I will certainly attempt to provide an alternative explanation.

Just a final thought. Would 're-installing' the latest version over the top work, and not lose my settings? I am running the latest version i.e. XYpIorer 26.30.0400. I always accept the latest updates whenever they are notified.

When I click on Favorites I see this, and I don't understand why the long Favorite Folders listing would open up :?

He means when he hovers over the "Favorite Folders" entry even only for a split second, the submenu is opened.

Sounds like a Windows setting was set to an unrealistic low value (maybe via a tweaking tool)...

Yes, he probably means that, but he does not say so. Anyway, I think you're right about the Windows tweaks.

Even with all of these assumptions being right, for me the list of favorite folders opens to the right of the shown menu and therefore still allows to select any menu item or one of the favorite folders in the list.

Low screen resolution / very long paths can lead to situations where those submenu entries hide the following (main) entries...

Just realized why everyone is maybe confused about what I am saying. Can I make it clear - I am not interested in all of My Favorites within the Favorites Menu - if that makes sense.

I want to use things like - 'set highlight color' and 'set box color' and all the other stuff etc etc...

My Screen Resolution is, and this is a copy/quote directly out of Windows 7:
1366 x 768 (recommended) And to put that into context - I am running a laptop with a 15.6 inch screen.

All the other menus work fine - no problem whatsoever.

I am running at Medium - 125% and have been doing so for the last two years. Running XYPlorer Dark Theme and Running Windows 7 Fujitsu Standard Theme as my display theme

As I say none of the other menus are causing me any problem whatsoever.

OK - By analogy: say I want to work with Tags and all the 'good stuff' in there.

I click on Tags - I will call it Root of the menu - so I click once on it to actuate it - I then get all of the 'good stuff' in there.
I can pull my mouse down and pass over all of the stuff in there until I get to what I want to use.

IMPORTANT POINT: And it works fine - just as all of the other menus. It is just the Favorites that is not behaving as it should.

I have applied no windows tweaks in recent days. And so I have to ask: Why just this one particular Menu?

I have checked for overly long paths. However: As I say I am not interested in the Favorites List. If you have not gathered by now: I wish it was not there and displaying in my face and stopping me doing what I do want to do. Of course it is nice it is there, but at the moment it seems to be the big issue [sic].

By the way my XYPlorer Log-on name - nogenius is a tongue in cheek joke. My real name is Glyn. I say that just in case people are taking it literally. I am sure you are not, and I thank you for your continued, kind, and understanding support.

Then add a user button with a script that only shows the things you really want it to?

E.g.:

Code: Select all

"Toggle Highlighted Folder" #567;
"Set Highlight Color" #569;
"Set Box Color" #570;

Further Information: and eventually stumbled on the solution Too Many Favorites in the Favorites

Discovered another strange thing that might be related and maybe this might help the admin to suggest what else I can try to resolve the issue.

I get in and with luck get to the manage favourites.. click it and the dialogue comes up. All well and good.

However, surely I should see all of the favourites in there so I can manage them - maybe clear all of them out.

The dialogue box is empty.

I will point out that all of the other menus work fine.

I have also removed a package called MyFolders using TotalUnistall so it should be completely gone.

I have booted into the Safe Mode and tried XYPlorer in there i.e. the issue, and it does it in there.

I rebooted and the issue is still happening.

I am running the latest release of XYPlorer.

I hope this additional information provided might help us in reaching a solution.

Ah! Solved it. I went in via the button supplied for actuating Favourites menu etc and cleared my list of favorites. It is now empty.

I go to the actual pull-down menu and it works as it should. It seems that somehow things had built up in there and somehow this was causing the trouble. I am not sure how big this list can go before it causes trouble. I guess I had maybe over 15 items in there.

I hope this helps someone else if they come across this happening.

If 15+ favourites would cause this issue, hundreds of users would have reported this already...

I certainly agree.

Strange things happen and each person's mileage may vary.

All any of us can do is to say what is happening. This is particularly true when things are not following a logical pattern, as in this case. Programs are logical entities. And whilst it can take a long time to resolve something that I/we believe is a fallacy, then that does not mean we should stay silent and ignore such stuff.

It is good that we can share with each other whatever we discover.

And on that note, I thank everyone for the journey we have, together, been on.

Thank You from:
Glyn

I would certainly like to provide a screenshot because as they say: a picture is worth a thousand words. We are all, visual thinkers; I know I like a good diagram or infographic etc.

As I posted here on the forum: I 'cleaned out' all the Favorites.

As stated before, all other the menus operated perfectly. I was really surprised by the behaviour of the Favourites Menu. Of course, it was also annoying to not be able to use XYPlorer to its full extent - least of all setting highlight colours etc.

Please let me know if you would like me to create loads of Favourites and try to get XYPlorer to exhibit this issue. I maybe then could possibly capture some sort of screenshot. The capture may not be easy because of the very nature of the issue.

Again, many thanks to everyone in the Forum for their time in suggesting possible things that could have been causing the problem. It is much appreciated.

I am happy because all is working now as it should do.

All the best
Glyn
