Custom path aliases in tabs

Post by c0thirty »

Not sure if something like this is already available.. would it be possible to have custom path aliases in Tab names? Similar to how "Downloads" works as a special path (though maybe that's a builtin Windows thing?)
Currently, a tab can be renamed to a static name, which doesn't change regardless of location.

For example, suppose I have some folder C:\path\to\MyAnimalPics.
Inside this directory are subfolders Cats and Dogs

It would be neat if I could define an alias to "C:\path\to\MyAnimalPics" as something like "Animals". Then, when I'm in a subdirectory, instead of the tab text reading C:\path\to\MyAnimalPics\Cats for instance, it would simply say Animals\Cats. Maybe this could be tied in with the tab "Home" function?

There are plans to go even beyond this: You will be able to do your own special path mappings, e.g. "C:\path\to\MyAnimalPics" -> "Animals", and "Animals" will work everywhere in the application, including the tab headers. Wait for the UFO feature (User Folders).

UFO - Yeah!

I correctly expect the contents to be (optionally) completely virtual (paperfolders)?

No. You just get a short path, and a top location in the tree. Just like "Documents" and "Desktop" etc.

I've been looking forward to UFO being implemented since it was called UDFM. :P

What would be the best place for the UFOs in the tree?

1) Child nodes of This PC below [User], above C:\

2) Under a common parent "User Folders" in above position

3) Same as 1) but below Recycler

4) Same as 2) but below Recycler

5) Elsewhere

I personally tend to 3). Full scroll down to user special folders (UFOs), full scroll up to system special folders (Desktop, Documents etc).

It would be cool if there is a drop-down option field where each user can choose the setting he likes... (ofc elsewhere isn't an option there)^^

The cool stuff comes later. :)

The common parent "User Folders" options are garbage. We want short paths: "Blah" not "User Folders\Blah".

Yeah I think something like #3 would be good but top level instead, because it might be nice being able to collapse all UFOs under 1 node, that's not to say that the node name has to be included in the actual path name when referencing them though. I think they should be like Network though and have its own top level node, because you don't reference paths like Network\whatever-pc so you needn't UFO\Blah, it could just be Blah, so maybe a node like that which is outside the ThisPC hierarchy, that way you could collapse ThisPC, and just focus on the UFOs when required, or vice versa, and having a top node could give you a drop target to quick create entries.

It's still a lot of work, and I can't find a good UFO icon, but it's going to be awesome. And it will even support paper folders!

Yeah, this has been planned for years, now it's good that I waited so long (= found no time for so long), because now it fits naturally with UFO.

UFO is a nice abbreviation, but in the interface it has to be "User Folders", of course. It's a bit unfortunate, however, that the similar term "User Folder" already exists. Also "User Folders" is a bit lame. So I'm actually looking for a different name for the thing, i.e. for this new top folder and the items in it.

What we are talking about here are branches of the tree that are kind of lifted out of the tree to a focused top position. I hope this sparks your creativity.
