xyp not responding if network drive is offline

Post by xyrys »

I have a problem, i absolutely love xyp. But i can't use it because of performance issues, because of my network storage server.
The server is the most of the time offline, only online for backups or watching movies, etc.
I connected the server via a sambashare (server = ubuntu). I mapped the drive via the Windows 11 map network drive.
My PC is a gaming monster, latest updates, etc ...

Now to my problem:
If i work with the Win 11 Explorer, all is fine, as long as i don't touch the offline network drive (drag a file and move it over the network drive causes a 10 to 15 seconds freeze of the explorer). I think thats because Windows try to accesss the drive, but it's not possible. I can live with that, because its possible to avoid this.

If i use xyp, now everytime i access the "This PC" location, xyp tries to load the drives, even without me clicking the network drives in the first place. That causes also a 10 to 15 sec freeze (sometimes it takes more than 1 minute). In this time xyp is completely not repsonding (that is also displayed in the window title), if i wait, at some point xyp is responding again. But this is impossible to work with. (i can make a video if it helps to understand my problem)
I tried a lot of different options within xyp:
- Assume that servers are available on/off
- Cache network servers on/off
- No network browsing on/off
- Reconnect mapped network drives on startup /off

I use the newest version of xyp, but for me the problem exists for a long time, basically since i bought xyp in 2018. I don't know, what i can do, so my hope is that someone of you can help me. I really want to use xyp.

If the "This PC" location is opened when i close the program, the next startup lasts realy long, like 1 min or so.
I executed this code: text <get loadtimes>, 800, 680;

XY ver: XYplorer 25.20.0100 - Lifetime License Enterprise

Can someone from you help me with that? I would really appreciate this.
Thanks in advance

Ok i think i found a nice workaround.

I started the server and created a dummy.txt file in the root folder of the network drive. Now i rightclicked and ticked "make always available" or so.
Now xyp doesn't freeze anymore. For me the workaround is fine.

I also created a ps1 script (okay chatgpt did it) to map/unmap my network drives and bound them to a custom button within xyp, thats also a nice way to do it (this versin is bad if you missed to unmap the drives before closing xyp)

But i really can live with my workaround :)

Interesting, did not know about this trick. Do you have a screenshot of that setting in the right-click menu?

Sure, here is the button in Win11 explorer (old context menu)
"Immer offline verfügbar" translates to "Always available offline."

One downside from my workaround is, that windows actually needs some time, after the server is awake again, till the remote files on the network storage are displayed again (the ticked "Immer offline verfügbar" file is all the time available as it should).

PS: okay now i encountered a freeze again, but a very small one in comparison, like 3 seconds or so. I'll watch this further and will respond.

Thanks!

Would it be a solution to add a way to "park" certain drives in XYplorer (maintain a small list of parked drives)? XYplorer will then never access such a parked drive. Hmmm...

So you mean that i tick the "Always available offline" for a file, and then the network drives in xyplorer are moved to the parking lot, if the server is unavailable?

Not sure if i understood you correct.

I am thinking of an internal XYplorer solution that does not require your workaround. Just a simple way to tell XY not to access certain drives.

Yeah, that would be good i think.

But XYplorer need to check if the server is on or offline right? Or is this only user defined if a server shoud be accessed or not?
If there are checks it would be nice if that could happen in the background without impact on the users workflow.
Just brainstorming here :)

I was thinking of a manual approach. It's on my list. Needs more thinking...
