Can't Scroll PDF Preview

admin wrote: 21 Feb 2023 11:10 Do you get (want) a full preview, scrollable thru all the pages? Or just a thumbnail (usually a shot of the first page)?
Not to hijack this thread, but how would I get the full preview to be scrollable? Currently I can left-click on the PDF icon and the PDF shows the first page full size as long as I'm holding down the left mouse button. If I right-click on the PDF icon the full first page stays visible until I click anywhere on page. But I can't scroll to other pages.

Thanks.
All PDF preview handlers I know (a lot) support scrolling inside of a preview.
May be you have set to show PDFs as thumbnails in XY.
Thanks Horst, but I'll be damned if I can find where I have PDFs set as thumbs.

I found this in the Help Manual:
Preview as Thumbnail
This category is for files that are known to implement their preview not via Preview Handlers but via
Thumbnail Providers. It simply saves time, energy, and climate to skip other preview methods that
won't work anyway. 32-bit and 64-bit Thumbnail Providers are supported.
Note: To make use of 64-bit Thumbnail Providers at least one of these options has to be ticked:
Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Use 64-bit preview handlers for preview
Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Fall back to preview handlers of the
other bitness
Usage Tip: If you add the extension "pdf" to "Preview as Thumbnail" you get the fast thumbnail
preview for PDFs everywhere (Preview Tab, Preview Pane, Floating Preview). It usually shows the first
page of the PDF.
Of course, a Thumbnail Provider for PDF must exist.
I'm using PDF-XChange PDF Viewer and while it does indeed preview the PDF, I can't scroll through the preview. I've enabled each of the 64-bit options mentioned. Individually and both together. And neither. As far as I can tell, I do not have PDF added to Preview as Thumbnail. And the only "Preview as Thumbnail" setting I can find is under Video Preview.

Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

Your problem is this tip
"Usage Tip: If you add the extension "pdf" to "Preview as Thumbnail"
Unselect it !
This has nothing to do with the Video entry.
It has to be disabled or removed from this one.

Did you check that Windows Explorer can show full scrollable previews of PDF files ?

You can also try to add/enable the following User-Defined preview handler but this shouldn't be necessary.

There is no PDF listed in Preview as Thumbnail.

I did and it does.

I have Foxit Reader and PDF-XChange PDF Preview Provider listed under User-Defined Preview Handlers. Currently I have unchecked Foxit. However, for both applications, the GUID on mine is not the same as showing in your screenshot. How to I obtain the correct GUID? It's also showing "Foxit Reader PDF Document" in front of the GUID and "PDF-XChange PDF Preview Provider" after the GUID.

How is one supposed to get the preview to scroll? I've tried right-clicking and the preview will remain visible until I touch a key. I can scroll the mouse wheel but that doesn't scroll the previewed document.

I don't consider myself computer illiterate, but I'm feeling particularly dumb about this.

Thanks again for your help. And for you patience.

To find the Ids of your available preview handlers
run the following cmd as admin

Code: Select all

@Echo off
Echo/>>%0
Echo ============================================ >>%0
Echo Computername: %ComputerName% Date: %Date% %Time:~0,6% >>%0
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PreviewHandlers" >>%0
More +9 <%0
Pause
goto :EOF
The output is in the same file and on the screen, it looks like this for me.

Thanks Horst, that's a nifty little piece of work.

That being said, my GUIDs for both Foxit and PDF-XChange are the same as Don's and yet I still get the PDF preview to scroll. Even with Foxit removed from the User-Defined Preview Handlers. Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

Sorry, no more ideas from my side.
May be Don has more tests to do.
I have installed PDF-XChange Editor and scrolling previews works
in Explorer, Total Commander, Everything and XY.

Does Explorer scroll in previews ?

Yes, with the mouse wheel.

Are you using the mouse wheel to scroll a PDF preview?

Hmmm ... I just thought of something ...
I've been referring to 'preview' as hovering the mouse over the file's icon is the list view. Which pops up a full size preview of the first page. I've had the info panel enabled and can indeed scroll when the PDF file is previewed in the info panel and/or in a floating preview panel. Could that be the issue? That I was expecting the 'pop-up' preview to scroll?

Yes, you were certainly expecting something that doesn't happen in hover box for anyone (i.e., hovering over an icon in the list panel). If it's working properly, you should be able to scroll in Floating Preview or Fullscreen Preview. Type "Floating" or Full Screen Preview " in the List all Commands under the Help menu to see the shortcut keys assigned for these. They can be re-assigned. Hit "F1" while the hover box is showing to see what can be done in hover box.

Thanks klownboy, for confirming my suspicion of false expectations. Or simply that I was looking in the wrong place for the "scrollability" of the preview.

I added a floating preview button to the toolbar and will perhaps also add a hotkey.

Thanks again.

Phred - does F11 work for you to bring up the floating preview? Win 10 x64, XY v24.20.0510. In a ::fresh installation I customize the toolbar to show the Floating Preview icon. Clicking on that icon works - but pressing F11 does nothing. F9 and F10 do what they should for XY so it's odd that F11 doesn't. I've been messing with hotkeys in another app and may have gotten something sideways - but will submit this as a bug if it doesn't work for you either.

F11 default works fine to get the floating preview.
So don't submit a bug.
Check your settings and test in a fresh instance.

As noted, I had tried a ::fresh instance.

The problem turned out to be a screen-print app which had global control over F11. Photoshop too takes global control of keys. Tracking such things down isn't easy btw. The best tool I found is HotkeyDetective from:

https://github.com/ITachiLab/hotkey-detective

Start both the x86 and the x64 versions (run as Admin), focus the mouse elsewhere eg. on the desktop, and press the subject key. If any app has global control of that key, one of the two HD windows will show it.
