Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Note : I searched this forum with multiple entries before starting a new topic, but I could not find the answer.
Issue : 1. a particular folder (with it's particular location/address) is open in a separate tab, 2. I move that folder (e.g. by using other pane or another program) to another location, 3. that XYplorer tab referring to folder in question automatically changes address to new folder location -> I do not like that, I want it to keep the old address (although it is temporarily empty) -> what setting do I need to tweak ?
Example : 1. I keep my "Opera" on this address "C:\Portable\Opera\", while having new version in other pane under "Documents", 2. I open "C:\Portable\Opera\" in a new tab, I synchronize some files in left and right pane, when I move old Opera away from "C:\Portable\" the "C:\Portable\Opera\" tab is no longer there (it changed to new location).
I hope I was clear in describing this, I tried to keep it short and concise.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Too exotic. You are the only one who wants this.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
OK, Mr. Admin,
never mind the "exotic" or "tropical" ...
What I am inquiring about
was XYplorer's DEFAULT behavior
(therefore NOT so "exotic")
until few versions ago !
Are You telling me that XYplorer's
DEFAULT behavior just few versions ago
was something very "exotic" or wired ?

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Thanks for Your reply.
I suspected that my description was a fail.
The process is VERY COMMON and PLAIN,
just awkward to describe.
Here is a better attempt (best do what I am doing) :
1. lets say, I want to update my portable Opera at "C:\Portable\Opera" (this old version is 95.0).
2. In LEFT pane I open folder "C:\Documents\Opera 96.1\Opera"
3. In right pane I have a tab with "C:\Portable" and I open "C:\Portable\Opera" in a new tab (in right pane).
4. Now on both sides (left and right) I am looking at folder "Opera" (left is new version 96.1, right is old version 95.0).
5. I do some synchronizing, e.g. from right I copy (customized) sub-folder "Data" to left (to new version).
6. Now I move folder "C:\Portable\Opera" to left to end up as
"C:\Documents\Opera". At this point, until few versions ago, XYplorer's tab "Opera" in right pane REMAINED at "C:\Portable\Opera".
7. I move new Opera from "C:\Documents\Opera 96.1\Opera" to right to end up as "C:\Portable\Opera", my old tab on right side now shows new Opera version (but it kept same address - that was the default behavior of XYplorer until few versions ago).
In latest few XYplorer's versions that right-pane tab has now changed and is showing "C:\Documents\Opera" (it automatically tracked the folder movement ans updated the address) rather than keeping the originally designated address "C:\Portable\Opera".
Thanks for Your patience !

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Not exact enough. "Move" is far too vague. I want to hear about mouse or keyboard action: keys pressed, mouse buttons pressed etc. , controls focused, source controls, target controls... go down to where it gets muscular.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Thanks, we are making big progress,
because You were able to follow me
till point 6 out of 7.
Let me rephrase 6 and 7 :
6. Now I drag-and-drop folder "C:\Portable\Opera" to left to end up as "C:\Documents\Opera". At this point, until few versions ago, XYplorer's tab "Opera" in right pane REMAINED at "C:\Portable\Opera" (and was briefly "empty").
7. I drag-and-drop new Opera from "C:\Documents\Opera 96.1\Opera" to right pane to end up as "C:\Portable\Opera", my old tab on right side now shows new Opera version (but it kept same address - that was the default behavior of XYplorer until few versions ago).
In latest few XYplorer's versions that right-pane tab has now changed and is showing "C:\Documents\Opera" (it automatically tracked the original folder relocation and updated the address) rather than keeping the originally designated address "C:\Portable\Opera".
This new XYplorer behavior started ROUGHLY around the time when You introduced these "Virtual Folders", I am not claiming a causative link but the timing roughly matches ...

Alternative wording :
6. Now I drag-and-drop folder "C:\Portable\Opera" to left (to "C:\Documents") to end up as "C:\Documents\Opera".
7. I drag-and-drop new Opera from "C:\Documents\Opera 96.1\Opera" to right pane (to "C:\Portable") to end up as "C:\Portable\Opera",

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Your tab is in C:\Portable\Opera, and then you drag C:\Portable\Opera from list to tree? That's not possible.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
I do not use any tree.
I drag sub-folder "Opera" from tab "C:\Portable\" in right pane
to tab "C:\Documents\" in left pane.
I never used the word "tree", only "pane" and "tab".
Please see attached image.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
When I do this both tabs stay where they are.
Are you maybe using any Custom Event Actions?
PS: for starters try to replicate the issue with a fresh instance.

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
I am NOT using any significant
Custom Event Actions.
If you want to quickly verify,
I attached another screenshot
taken from Configuration window :

Before opening this post
I was initially actually
thinking of using a script
to compensate for this problem
but I dot know how to
write or use such a script.
Thanks !

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
1) Attach images here in the forum:
2) Show a screenshot of your panes before the move and after the move.FAQ | XY News RSS | XY Bluesky
Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
Thanks, I wasn't sure how to attach/include images.
So here we go ...
1. Here are the 4 tabs in question, active tab has a pink background, I include 4 images so you can verify the 4 addresses (ScreenShots 1-4).
2. I drag and drop folder "Opera" from "Portable" to "Documents" (ScreenShots 5 & 6).
3. Right-most tab has automatically changed it's address (ScreenShot 7).

Re: Preserve Tab Address on Moving Folder
So, we are talking about background tabs that are pointing to the folder that's being moved. Those tabs are indeed updated to the new state of reality, and according to my logs it's done so since 20090528.
