How to search file contents in PDFs?

Post by starmatrix »

I've just downloaded the trial for the Pro version.
I need to replace the standard Explorer with Windows 10.

I want to search the contents of PDFs.
XYPlorer doesn't do the job.
It doesn't find PDFs that have text I know is there. 😕
Windows Explorer finds though

I have a problem: Windows Explorer finds, but if the text is vertical, it doesn't find.
I was hoping to use Xyplorer, but so far, it doesn't find contents of PDF's at all.

Am I doing anything wrong?

I've tested and searched for contents of CSV's - that works OK.

I've been using Explorer++.
That's 95% there - but alas the missing 5% makes it really hard to use.

Thanks.

Try enabling this:

Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Use 64-bit IFilters for content search

To see what iFilter is resposible for PDF content search or change the assigment
use the NirSoft tool iFilterView
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_filter_view.html

I use a free iFilter which works independend from the installed PDF viewer
which also have an iFilter installed, PDF-Xchange Editor in my case.

Just following on from the last 2 replies

Any idea why the xyplorer freezes when I tick the boxes:

Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Use 64-bit IFilters for content search
Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Fall back to IFilters of the other bitness

?

I don't like running 3rd party exe's unless I have to. So reluctant to install the download from nirsoft.
But... the way I see it... there is an ifilter on my machine. It works OK when used with default explorer.
So... there is a bug in xyplorer?

Let me know what you think.

I'll stop here as you are not willing to follow suggestions.

Unless you're only running Microsoft applications on a Windows machine, -all- software is third-party software.

There's no bug here. XY is not Windows File Manager and doesn't necessarily do similar functions the same way.
