Runtime error '5' when dbl-click a gif file

Runtime error '5' when dbl-click a gif file

To pity, the minute that Don takes his well deserved break i find a problem.

When i double click a gif file, this error dialog pops up.
Image
As soon as i click the Ok button, XYplorer closes. Some more information:
  • When i choose 'Preview' from the context menu the Windows Image and Fax viewer opens.
  • The Preview (Ctrl-q) works.
  • Double click in Windows Explorer opens the Windows Image and Fax Viewer.
  • XYplorer version is 6.80.0042

Anyway, I just tried it on a gif here and it works just fine, even though I'm also just a tiny bit non-current (6.80.111)...

So could you first get yourself on a fresh beta and see how that reacts? I'm fairly sure Don would ask you to get up-to-date also.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Why are you so far behind? That's vers is from way back in Jan!
LOL! That's correct, for XYPlorer this is ancient.

Back to the problem: Same thing with 6.80.0114. It must be a configuration problem, that is not handled correctly. To my surprise gif is not a registered file type on my system (Explorer>Options>Folder options>file types). Not only that not application is registered to open gif, there is just not entry at all for gif. Maybe that's the problem? But why opens the Windows Image Viewer when i dbl-click in the WinExplorer?

You're on Win XP, right? I'm on W2K so we'd have slightly different options available...I just double checked on my File Type setup for GIF...I have it defined as opening via IrFanView...not sure what default would be on mine...I'd see what happens if you define a 'handler' for GIF's.

I used irfanview to register gif as file type for all users. Now it works as expected in XYplorer. This is ok as workaround.

Strange. When you dblclick a file with a non-registered extension a certain standard dialog should pop up. And it does over here. Almost looks like some registry corruption on your side (how can it be that GIF is not associated with any app?). But of course it should not result in a crash! If you ever can reproduce it, please check your registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif and tell me how it looks.

PS: there might also be a syntax error in your PFA (portable file associations). Please check if "gif" is in there.
