[6.80.0.x] Random crashes

Post by noirRLC »

My Xyplorer has started crashing randomly all of a sudden, there doesn't seem to be any specific action that triggers it but it just happens sporadically. The crash is happening on all the 6.80.0.x releases.

I get the following error (unfortunately XP won't let my just copy the entire error log):

Please let me know if there's any more specific information I can give that might be helpful.

Unfortunately those Windows error messages are of no big use. Without any pattern it is impossible to analyze. Generally a random crash is very unlikely caused by XY itself because XY does not do anything unless you trigger it. There's no background activity.

Apart from that, the most likely culprit for crashes is always 3rd shell extensions. Maybe you can turn some off (if you have any) and see what happens.

Thank you for the reply. I switched to XYplorer Free for now and it seems to play nice with this system so fortunately I'm not completely stranded without XYplorer :)

So you did not find any pattern? Weird. I'd like to know what's happening...

I'm afraid not. At first I thought it might have something to do with TortoiseSVN, but it kept occurring even without overlay icons. Unfortunately I'm on a computer at my workplace so I don't have the ability to experiment with the background apps to much (I never encountered the problem on my computer at home).

Okay, thanks. If you find something by chance, let me know.

I'm leaning towards a problem with Trend Micro AV. After having killed all processes related to Trend Micro I don't seem to get the crashes anymore. Another curious thing is that XYplorer never crashed when it was focused, it seems like it always happened when XYplorer was in the background.

Indeed curious! Thanks for the info anyway, and glad that you seem to have solved it. :D

I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms and have tried several fresh installs, deleting configuration files, etc. but the problem persists -- random (but frequent) crashes when the xyplorer window is open but in the background (i.e., not focused). I'm not running Trend Micro AV (using Webroot). Anyone else experiencing this? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Yeah I don't think Micro AV was the culprit, my crashes stopped temporarily but came back again.
I'm going to post a log of background applications when I return to my office computer on Tuesday so maybe we can find some odd program we have in common.

Please try to disable Auto-Refresh (in menu View) and tell me if the issue is still going on. Thanks.

So far so good, I've been using it without auto-refresh the entire week and haven't had a single crash during that period.

Good, thank you, that's an important info! I see what I can do...

Now, to narrow down the source of the problem, please do me a favor.
(1) Re-enable AutoRefresh
(2) Close XYplorer, and manually set this key XYplorer.ini:
DisableSHChangeNotifyRegister = 1
This disables a part of XY's AutoRefresh system.

Now run it like that for a few days (if nec), and tell me if the crashes are back or not.

Thanks!
