shortcut bug, That's what I get (aka because of me)

Whenever I open a folder that contains a shortcut with a path like the following xyplorer hangs up for about 30 seconds. I have not modified these shortcuts recently and windows explorer does not have any issues opening the folders when i use it to browse into them. The following are a couple examples of syntax I tried which still performed the same way

\\servername\share\folder\myexe.exe "\\servername\share\folder\ini"
\\servername\share\folder\
\\servername\share\folder\file.txt


I thought the problem may have been because almost all of the servers I connect to have a '-' but I modified one of the shortcuts to use a path without the dash and it still had the same problem.

I also tested the shortcut by modifying it to go to the same location but use a mapped drive instead and I did not have problem:

p:\folder\myfile.exe

instead of

\\server1\share\folder\myfile.exe

Unfortunately creating a mapped drive for each one is not an option. If you are crunched on time or just don't feel like messing with it go ahead and revert to the old functionality before my request (which appears to have broken this ><) because that was useable but it just required an extra click or two.

Just to clarify, the issue occurs while opening the folder that contains the shortcut (i also moved the shortcuts to different folders with same problem). Once the folder opens the shortcuts work fine and respond quickly. If I remove the shortcuts from the folder (placing in subfolder is fine) and access it again There is no delay or lock-up.

I do believe this happened after you modified the functionality when I requested it. I am running the most recent beta as of an hour ago.

Just to make sure: You are not talking about opening the shortcuts pointing to folders, but about opening (selecting in tree?) folders that contain those shortcuts, right?

yes, I am talking about when I click on my local drive.

To clarify, lets say the shortcut in question resides in c:\temp\shortcuts\ with a name of myshortcut.lnk

I then open xyplorer and using the tree browse to c:\temp\ and that opens the contents of that folder with no problems. I think click on the shortcuts folder which contains myshortcut.lnk and XYplorer becomes unresponsive for ~30 seconds.

Once the folder contents load xyplorer functions normally and I can double click myshortcut.lnk to open the shortcut with no issues. But, if I navigate to a different folder in the tree and then click on the c:\temp\shortcuts\ folder the delay happens again.

This also happens if I switch between tabs.
one tab is ponting at c:\temp\shortcuts\ which contains myshortcut.lnk and the second tab is pointing at c:\files. If I highlight the tab pointing at c:\files and then try to click back on the tab pointing to c:\temp\shortcuts the same delay occurs.

Finally,
I have folders defined in the the box (sorry forgot name, under the tree view on left side) where you define categories. They are setup to goto the folder when I click on them. The same thing happens if that folder contains one of the shortcuts.

Please goto Configuration/Advanced and check "Use generic icons for faster browsing" . Still slow then?

I wonder why there isn't the lag issue when I used a mapped drive. I would think it would be the same either way since they do point to the same location.

actually, I realised fairly quickly that I do to

A temp workaround for me at the moment is:
- set configuration to use generic icons but only in network locations
- place shortcuts on a network share
- create a shortcut to the share
**a shortcut pointing to a folder doesn't have the same problem (or appears not to) as one pointing to an application.

that way i dont have to give up the icons for anything else.


I did some checking and it looks like explorer is loading the generic icon (same generic icon you use) by default. When I double click it, the application launches and icon stays the same. I can even single click and wait briefly before I double click and the app launches.

But, if I single click the icon and let it stay highlighted I get the same type of delay I am experiencing in xyplorer. Once the delay is finished the icon has changed to the same one you are loading. It looks similiar to the .cmd or .bat icon except the white portion is empty and there is a blue arrow coming in from the bottom left.

It looks to me like they load the generic icon if the shortcut is on a remote machine (i checked mapped drive also) or if the target of the shortcut is on a remote machine.

The icon stays generic unless the the shortcut is selected for a specific amount of time or the shortcut properties are selected.

No need to ! Those changes some days ago only concerned the opening of a shortcut, not retrieving its icon.

I checked my Explorer (XPSP2) and infact it does display the specific icons for shortcuts pointing to UNC locations. I'm surprised that this is different on your side. Can anybody give me a third opinion on this?

I also would like to know if anybody else can confirm this delay in displaying shortcuts pointing to UNC locations. I wonder why this has never come up before. The related code has not been changed since years so I'm inclined to think the code is okay...

Thanks. I changed it a bit: Now, when settings are "Show Generic Icons", then also the catalog will only show generic icons for network locations.
