Eliminate Internet Connection Entirely

Post by Ctrl/Alt/Del »

Hello,

I realize that XYplorer uses the IE browser engine in order to display web pages saved on my hard-drive in it's "preview" section.

What I would like for someone to instruct me how to do is to still be able to use this feature, yet not have XYplorer connect to the Internet to do it.

I unchecked the .htm & .html check boxes in configuration/previewed formats and then I lose all ability to view web pages in the preview section, as all of you probably already knew.

I have blocked all incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP protocols relating to XYplorer with my firewall, yet XYplorer still connects to the Internet whenever I click on a saved web page and try to "preview" it.

To end what is probably turning into a long and confusing story for everyone except myself, how can I still use the preview function for saved web pages, yet have XYplorer not connect to the Internet in anyway whatsoever.

I am clicking on saved web pages and getting pop up ads and all kinds of things going on.

Thanks,

Altie

Good question!

I'm using the WebBrowser Control which has a property .Offline, and I explicitly set .Offline = True each time when I preview a HTML page. But, for unknown reasons the control does not obey to this setting with the results you describe...

I researched this the last time maybe 2 years ago without success. If anybody happens to have the solution, I'd be grateful!

When I updated to newer vers of Zone Alarm firewall, I got the alert from it that XY was trying to access the "internet", but based on IP, it was simply trying to get to my local machine, so I let it go thru as before...but then again, I've never had a case where I get any undesired pages or pop-ups within XY preview pane, even while viewing saved web pages.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

I am getting a UDP connection being utilized by XYplorer, even with XYplorer incoming and outgoing UDP and TCP protocols blocked with my firewall.

If you will, do me a favor and save this webpage---

http://www.rolltide.com/ViewArticle.dbm ... LID=742702

as a regular .html document, save it to your hard drive, then try to preview it.

It has a popup that should come with it. Now, this is just one example out of a hundred webpage's that I have saved that have popup's when using the preview function in XYplorer, there is nothing special about this one.

Ok...when I went to that site using normal IE6 session (I used "open in new window" on your link), I got an indicator that my Google Toolbar had blocked a pop-up, but I didn't see it...however, when I saved the page using "Web page, HTML only" and then previewed it via XY, I did get the pop-up which was the first time I'd seen that happen...the web pages that I typically save must be much plainer and not have embedded java causing these things...so I do see your issue, and not sure how to prevent it.

Update: I was able to block pop-up in XY by setting both Access and Server "Internet" to 'Block' and leaving Access and Server "Trusted" to 'Ask' in ZoneAlarm 7.0.462...but it seems that blocks some parts of the page also.

Same issue here with Norton Internet Security, which includes a fire wall component.

Not directly related, but even when I browse the net with my regular browser with the pop-up blocker on, some pages still go through holes and show pop-ups. I guess it's a cat-and-mouse-chase. Those annoying advertizers always find holes. This leads me to think that there is a lot more going on in this issue. (Not to imply that XY is like pop-up advertizers.)

Thanks for testing it, j_c_hallgren.

I am using Kerio Firewall and can't prevent XYplorer from connecting, I've tried everything I know with it.

It isn't just the popups. XYplorer connects to the Internet on many different saved web pages, regardless of whether or not a popup appears or not.

I will just disable preview for .html documents, for now,and see if anyone else may have some suggestions for us.

Thanks,

Altie

Just had a thought...given that you want to keep XY from going surfing by itself, could you do something like ZA has, whereby you set a "Internet Lock" (stops all Net traffic) while previewing those pages? With ZA, that's like doing a disconnect but without actually doing so...may not be ideal, but if you're that concerned, it may an option.

I just tried menu File>Work Offline in IE7 and the page which gave me popups earlier doesnt pop-up anymore. Can anybody confirm this? Its a work around for me because IE is not my primary browser. But in any case its easy to go online with one click.

Serendipity, it did prevent XYplorer from connecting, good job. Like you, I don't use IE as my primary browser, so it will be no big deal.

I will not have to constantly check the work offline option and uncheck it everytime I want to browse, simply because I never use IE.

As you say, the popups don't appear anymore either.

Thanks,

Altie

I'm happy that a solution has been found. The the .Offline property doesnt work in XY must be a bug of the WebBrowser Control IMO.
