network folders with images open really slowly - windows explorer fast

Post by randfee »

Hi,

I'm dealing with a problem where some browsing of network folders with 16bit tif images is VERY slow (takes roughly .5s for each additional image file open) when windows explorer at the same time just works normally on the same folders. The parent directories or even subfolders work quickly if there are no such images. Preview is off, no thumbnails are being shown.
File types are 16bit tifs (10mb each), some python files.
I've searched the forum and tried many of the suggestions for similar issues

Settings currently, but I've already played with them without better results:
  • cache thumbnails on disk (off) ... was on .. no difference
  • create all thumbnails at once (off)
  • Fast network enumeration off (or on)
  • Assume that servers are available (on)
  • Pre-check availability of servers (off)
  • cache network servers (on)
I'm quite certain that the tif images are causing the problem, but settings wise I don't know what else to deactivate

Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | [x] Use generic icons for super-fast browsing
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | [x] But only in network locations

Does that change the situation?

Disable "Show shortcut overlays", "Show shared folder overlays" and "Enable custom file icons" and if that still doesn't change anything:

Record a short .gif video to show the problem (e.g. via http://blog.bahraniapps.com/gifcam/)

deactivating "Show shortcut overlays" didn't help.

Here's the GIF of a sample folder with ONLY 18 images. The delay increases with the amount of images in the folder, no other files have this impact! XYPlorer is unusable at this point, no idea what happend.

Ok, and you are 100% sure that XYplorer.exe is excluded in your antivirus solution?

no, but in our Sophos Endpoint solution nothing was changed either, just confirmed. We tested it while deactivated... no change.

Mh. Out of ideas currently...

When you're moving the .tif files out of "test few images", opening the folder will be instant again, right?

Can you upload one of these .tif files? I'd like to see if I'm able to replicate the problem...

  • yes, the moment the images are gone the folder loads quickly again
  • copy/pasting the images to make more of them (while in the folder) also is much slower than just the file operation, the XYPlorer refresh than takes the same time as loading the folder again
  • test image attached (it's a standard 1024*1024px 16bit tif)
  • the same happens with large jpgs (several MB) --> it has nothing to do with these TIF files... seems to be all image files

I've tested all file types that come to mind... it's just happening with certain images!!!
Tif and JPG --> yes, slowdown while loading folder
bmp --> NO slowdown...

... very strange

Can't replicate that. Copied the .tif to a network share, created 99 copies of it and accessed it with my normal and a fresh setup. 100% instant.

Execute fresh; from the address bar and test it with that instance.

If that works flawlessly, it's a problem with your .ini file. In that case remove the license info from your normal XYplorer.ini file (do it on a copy of it^^) and upload it (e.g. zipped)...
