XY doesn't preview PDF's natively, you need a preview handler for pdf which is usually installed along with pdf viewer apps.
Due to bad experiences with Adobe the recommendation with XY is to use either PDF X-Change Viewer or Editor and then make sure you have the pdf preview ticked in the configuration (see below).
