How to display tags in a column beside the pdf file name?

Post by mmp997 »

I am new to XYplorer, excuse me. Within a folder, I need a way pdf files can be marked in terms of importance, a scale of 1 to 5. The ratings would be displayed in a separate tag column, and the files would be sortable according to the number in the tag. OK I get that I can add tags in XYplorer, but I haven't figured out how to display the tags I have added in a separate column beside the pdf file name. How do I do that?

The separate column feature is important - for ease of use. I don't want simply to be able to view the tag via mouse-over, or in a separate box. I want to see at one glance what tags I have assigned to each of a list of pdfs.

01. Right click on free space in the header column and choose one of the "Extra <x>" columns

02. Right click on this new column header (e.g. Extra 1) and choose "Configure Extra Column <x>..."

03. "Caption:" can be "Rating" or to use a real star: ★

04. "Type:" must be "Rating Stars"

05. Click on the "OK" button

06. Now you can rate your items by right clicking into the column field for this extra column and choose a star...

I did the following:

01. Right clicked on free space in the header column and chose "Tag" column.

02. Went to the top menu where it says "Tags" and input a number.

That is it.
It seems to work fine.
I have my ratings, and they display and can be sorted as required.

If there is a potential problem with this arrangement, please tell me!
I was a bit puzzled by your instructions 3 and 4...I didn't seem to come across "Caption" and "Rating"
It doesn't (for now) seem to matter, the solution seems fine.
Thanks!

Tags allows multiple, mh. tags^^
E.g. corona,study,fail

I personally would have used my way of using an extra column which has the advantage that the stars rating is from 1-5 and is not stealing the tags column...

I have now made the great adventure of installing XYplorer on the second of my 3 machines.
I don't seem to be able to make my tags visible.
Would the tags only be locally visible?

Amazing. May be a little complex for my limited skills, but still.
This means that to see the tags all PCs have to be on the same network?
So if I take a holiday in Nepal and tag remorselessly, my tags will only become visible to the other PCs on the network on my return to the UK?
Or will they never be visiblle?

It should probably work the same when using a webdav resource out of the local network and access that on all pcs via the same assigned drive letter if they should still be in sync when on holiday...

Webdav is certainly beyond me.
Assuming only local network, what happens when I come back from holiday?
Do my tags somehow replicate on the other machines?

Alas, the Help instructions are designed for coders, not for me.

The instructions say:

"Step 1: Understand the Structure. Each team member needs a copy of XYplorer installed on his local Windows. The tags database is a single file that will be kept in a central location accessible to each member of the network. That location would typically be an UNC path pointing to a shared folder, for example "\\North\Share\XY\SharedTags.dat". Nothing to do yet, just understand the structure."

But I don't understand the structure. When I look up the term UNC paths, I get this example:

\\servername\path

Does the name "North" have to be the same as the name of a PC on the network? So North is a PC? If two PCs are live but "North" is shut down, what happens? (presumably no access to my tags)

Also I have Windows Network problems. I have trouble connecting to the other PCs on my network, which is not surprising since I have never used the network for anything. But I gamely try to connect: I see the names of the other PCs under the folder "Network", but when I am asked to enter owner credentials, the system rejects the password I normally use to login (when I open up my PC in the morning). Also if by some chance this operation requires Remote Desktop, Windows Home doesn't support that.

Well this is unfortunate. Obviously I cannot expect other people to help me out with this level of incomprehension, it would be like a beginner at tennis expecting to play with a good player. No fun for the good player! Also this strays into Windows Help stuff, which I can hardly expect XYplorer to support. However the enthusiastic PR speak at the opening of this section of the Help file assuring me that it is easy-peasy and that I can set this up in 5 minutes should probably be edited (toned down).

1. The pc can have any (netbios) name. "north" is just an example name
2. "north" is a pc or in a larger network, a server
3. The other pcs would still have access to their database of tags before the sync to the "north" server broke down

I am tempted to ask, in a fresh question to the forum, whether any Windows Home users have managed to set up tags on multple PCs which communicate with each other.

This has nothing to do with the OS version, Home can access network shares in a private lan like any other version.

Well I have no idea how to go about this, so for the moment I am giving up.
Rather than 5 minutes I have spent half a day on this, and that is enough.
