Abnormally high values for "Layout Window"

Post by klownboy »

Hi Don, good to see you back. For the last few weeks I've been experiencing very long load times - specifically for "Layout Window" taking 4 to 6 full seconds for this one load item. It happens 90% of the time. I've always had XYplorer fully excluded from virus scans. The desktop computer in question isn't a super fast computer (1st generation i7-930), but I usually had a total load time around 1 second. Now it's more like 5 or 6 seconds and most of that is for "Layout Window". I know this isn't a XYplorer problem, but what can I look at specifically which would cause abnormally high values for this particular load item (i.e., what's Layout Window involve)? Thanks.

Yes, it still happens but not all the time. I just had another slow start this morning with most of the slowness attributable to Layout Window 1,383 ms: 4,557 ms - Layout Window. I've been trying to use process explorer and other tools to nail it down without any luck. That's why I was asking specifically about "Layout Window" and if there might be anything in particular about that which I could concentrate on. I also read this article https://www.zdnet.com/article/to-patch- ... asic-apps/ about VB issues in Windows 10 that gave me some concern. It mentions bug fix updates which break VB apps. But then again most people here would have seen this as well since they would have the same updates installed.

Windows does this sometimes. Might be an awaking drive, some AV background action, network stuff...

A little frustrating though when I have XYplorer excluded from any virus scans, drives are set to never sleep, and I have no network set up on this computer,

Whatever, since it comes sporadically it has to be Windows. XYplorer is strictly deterministic. :)

And, please show the load times from XYplorer 20.40.

Oh yes, I said in my original post. This last start wasn't too bad but this computer, if all is well, boots around 1100 ms. It's always Layout Window that's the culprit.

The next beta adds some loadtime stop points to narrow it down a bit.

458 ms: 8 ms - Layout Bars
466 ms: 9 ms - Layout Catalog
475 ms: 26 ms - Layout List

Ok, installed that last beta. It appears that the bulk of the time is taken up by "Load Catalog". I spent some time cleaning up the catalog after seeing the new load times with the beta. I had a few that I certainly didn't need and were probably put on only to test ideas from the forum. You notice that "Layout Catalog" and "Layout List" does appear twice in the listing...maybe a glitch in the beta or possibly one was supposed to be "Show" and the other "Layout"?

I closed and restarted XY about 10 times now since cleaning up the catalog including after a reboot. I'm getting load times consistently around 1050 - 1200 ms which is about what I was getting before this issue on this computer. I'd say that was very helpful additional information to have on the detailed load times. You should keep that breakdown if you can though you may want to look into the double entries I mentioned above.

Thanks Don. I'm not totally positive about it, but it looks like it may have been some bad or misbehaving catalog entries that were causing the slow startup.

Yes, I will keep them in.
I'll check that double entries.

Those Catalog entries that caused it, was that network or what? Were they in the visible part of the Catalog? Was the Catalog itself visible at startup?

I wish I had kept a copy of the catalog entries because now I don't remember specifically what they did, but they were not network related (no network on this computer). They were a visible part of the catalog and it was displayed/visible on startup.

There should be a copy of catalog.dat in your AutoBackup folder <xydata>\AutoBackup...

OK, I forgot about backups. I was most suspicious of 2 executables, one script and one non existent icon .

One was DVDFab.exe that when started was checking servers for a long time. I'm not sure if it's checking their servers or checking mine, but in any case I don't have one. It took quite awhile for it to be ready for use. I don't use it now at all so I removed it from the catalog.

Another executable was BD Rebuilder (BDRB.exe). When I attempted to start it, it provided a message that the program was out of date and told me to go to their website to get an update. I haven't used that one in years so it went bye bye.

I had a catalog entry for an old script which would not run. I didn't bother to find out why. I just deleted the catalog entry.

The last one was an catalog entry which had an old icon since renamed or deleted. The item displayed a question mark. I updated the icon referral.

I've run all the remaining catalog entries and they work fine.

Thanks again.

The catalog does not run those executables on startup. It just tries to retrieve their icons. That might cause a lag if they are on an unavailable network location, or if some heavy AV action is triggered. The former can be eliminated if you tick Configuration | General | Startup & Exit | No network browsing on startup.

Good to know. I had no network browsing already checked since this computer isn't on a network.

So in general I may be better off referring to icons from my <xyicons> folder instead of the executables especially if the executables are in locations that are virus scanned (my xy folder is excluded obviously).

I noticed after installing the last beta v20.40.0005 that the 2nd start, the one after the very first start after using SC update, had a high Load Catalog value again (see below). Since that high load time start, the subsequent loads have been fine. But I'm going to further cleanup the catalog and refer to icons in <xyicons> from now on.
