White Box in Tree after Right-Click

Post by VeeGee »

Good afternoon all,
Using the latest beta on Windows 10 x64 1809 (all patched up). If I right-click on a drive or folder in the Tree (full, not mini) I am getting a weird white-out box.

The white-out box varies in size, depending if I right-click on something at the top or bottom of the page. Here's an example of a right-click on a folder near the top of the tree :

Looks like a Windows hickup. Did you already reboot?

Thanks Don. The reboot ended up fixing the issue. I boot up every morning and shut down each night. In this case I needed a mid-day restart.

Good afternoon,
Back on this again, but with more details and consistency to reproduce.

I run dual panes. I am noticing this issue when the bottom pane is active. If I right-click on an entry in the full/max tree above the selected node, the entries below the select node (see brown box) have the white background (see Figure 1). If I right-click an entry below the selected node (again, brown box), the items up to the node have the white background (see Figure 2).

I have narrowed it down to the following conditions :
1 - bottom pane is active, I am not experiencing the issue in the top pane, no matter what type of folder is selected
2 - selected tab in the bottom pane is a locked "Windows" folder (see Figure 3), e.g. Downloads, Documents, Pictures, etc. / this doesn't seem to occur w/"normal" folders.

Please note that does not happen when the top pane is selected/active. Now that it was happening again today, I was paying closer attention to what I was selecting and where I was selecting it from.

Hope this additional information helps out.

Win 10 Pro x64 on an HP Spectre x360 with a 4K monitor.
I upgraded to XYplorer ver 19.50.0100 two days ago and I've experienced a similar "White Box" issue four times. However, my white box covers the menu bar, toolbar and file location line.

I closed XYplorer and loaded the Windows Display app. The top section is blank revealing the Desktop beneath.

I always assume operator error but saw this thread and it is very similar to my experience. When I restart Windows the issue is resolved. Again, I suspect a Windows glitch but this never occurred before I upgraded to 19.50.0100 and it always seems to present there first. I did not notice this in other apps such as AmiBroker, Notepad++ or IRFan.

P.S. I can't get the pics inline so they're dropping to the bottom. I apologize for the poor display.

I tried your steps but it did not happen.

If I understood you correctly it does not happen always but only after some time of Windows usage, and from then on always, right? To me that's a clear Windows bug (or graphic card?).

You might check the debug log. Use this in the address bar and press ENTER:

Code: Select all

Although it doesn't happen to me (not a big uptime though), it seems to be connected with some redraw event. When I right click a folder in the tree and then click away to close the menu, the main menu bar flashes slightly most of the time (I guess a redraw event). Maybe connected somehow. I also couldn't reproduce with dual pane for now.

Correct, only after some time. I can't even pinpoint anything in Event Viewer. I'm going to chalk this up to more of a Windows 10 problem than XY. I swear, if Windows 10 had a face, I would punch it. Repeatedly.

Thanks for trying to replicate it and your hard work on XY. The next time I notice this I will try 1) restart the EXPLORER.EXE process and/or 2) Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to restart the video card.

If you put XY into Dark Mode, do you get a black box then? (Serious question)

Fascinating.

1. Can you reproduce this with a fresh installation? (I cannot, using the steps you have specified above.)

2. You seem to use Full Row Select in the tree. Does it also happen without Full Row Select?

Yes, happens in a fresh install.

I think this is it ! I disabled Full Row Select on the Tree, did a right-click, no white box. Turned it back on, right-clicked and the box is there again.

What's funny is, with Full Row Select ON and the white box appearing, if I turn on Dark Mode and then turn it off and then right-click, the box is no longer there (no matter the Full Row Select setting). It's like switching views "refreshes" something.

For now, I will run in non-Dark Mode w/the Full Row Select disabled on the Tree and see how it goes. Thanks for sticking with this one.

Yes, happens in a fresh install.
So you run a fresh install, then turn on Full Row Select in the Tree, then ... please give me the exact minimum steps to make it happen.
