Slow Loading of Large Folders

Post by H1313303 »

Folders larger than about 4GB load very slowly, about 10-20 seconds (depending on file size, probably could be longer) delay until the folder opens properly. After the first time loading, it the opened large folders load within 1-2 seconds. Rebooting causes the same issue again. I never delete cache files or anything of the sort. I have 32GB RAM and and Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2Ghz using XYplorer version 19.10

Not sure if the info above is relevant, but please fix this as Windows10 file explorer has no such issues with these folders.

Are you using custom columns? if you are, try following this advice: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19090&p=160050#p160050

If you are using custom columns right click the column header, select "Configure Custom Column" then in the popup dialog change the trigger drop down box.

Even if you aren't using custom column, and only have additional extended properties columns visible, every extra column you display will slow it down because it has to read each file individually to get the info to display.

Thanks a lot for the fast & detailed response, but I am still slightly lost. I do not believe I have any custom column.

I have attached an image of all the columns I am using. Which one do you reckon I should disable to achieve the performance expected?

"Space" is not a standard column...

Show a screenshot of
Menu - View - Views
when inside this folder

How many files are inside this folder?

When opening the folder for the first time after a restart\shutdown, this folder freezes for about 10 seconds. It has 44 items worth 1.36GB.

Right click the "Space" column header, does it show a a "Configure Custom Column #" menu item?

Also that folder looks like it contains a heap of exe's which need their icon extracting to show, so the first time you load that folder after re-booting your computer whether you are in Explorer or XY all the icons need loading into the shell cache, then both apps will load faster subsequently. To test if this is the cause/contributing factor you can temporarily enable this option:

Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Use generic icons for super-fast browsing

Testing with generic icons (but enabled size column):The folder loads much faster on XYplorer
XYplorer with actual icons (but enabled size column): Freezes while both items and their icons begin to load simultaneously, alongside very bad scrolling
Windows File Explorer: While icons slowly load, all of the items (folders and files) are pre-loaded, can be interacted with, and you can scroll.

What happens when you switch off
View - Views - Touchscreen Mode?

I'd say Windows Defender is the culprit. Read this:
https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=mse

BTW, I like your green tabs/breadcrumb design. Make me think I could (optionally) always have the selected tab in the color of the breadcrumb...

Excluding it from the Windows Defender made it super fast, even with icons enabled. Thank you both HighEnd & Admin for your time and quick replies.

Also thanks, I took inspiration from my Android files explorer.
