Excluded Folders Not Loaded From Find Templates

Post by hihi »

I am very new to XYplorer. I found that this program is very nice.

I am using XYplorer v6.3, OS XP SP2 Pro.

I am currently having this problem. I have saved a find template. The template includes 5 excluded folders.

When I use XYplorer, I have disabled and also delete some excluded folders, making it only 3 excluded folders left. At this point, I do not overwrite my find template.

Then, when I load the find template, almost every settings are loaded, which is good. I noticed that the excluded folders are not loaded. It is still remained at 3 folders, where it should be 5.

Is that by design? I also noticed that besides the .ini file there are tab_1.dat and also tab_2.dat in the FindTemplates folder. What are those files? I didn't save any find template besides the first one.

Thanks :)

Hi, and welcome to world of XY! :)

I'm a regular here on forum but don't use templates much (my search needs seem to vary each time!) so took a look at the wiki for your query:
http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/Fi ... _Templates
where it states that the Exclude Folders list, which is not stored in templates but managed globally...so...Excludes are "excluded" from the Templates, it seems..

Did you look into those two .DAT files? You should see that they are simple INI style files...one for each tab that you had open, is my understanding....

And if I'm wrong (which happens!), someone will correct me shortly!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Yes, by design.

The tab_*.dat files are stored per-tab find files settings. This is done automatically. It allows to remember those settings per tab across sessions.

Thanks for the reply.

In future version, can you make it so that the excluded files will be loaded from templates too?

Also, the option to disable the auto save tab_*.dat?Else I will be having a lot of those dat in the folder :)

Well, these things are done for a good reason... :)

1) Ok...I'm having a hard time remembering why the Exclude's are stored in the Templates but not loaded...can you remind me why? I think maybe allowing user to define which behavior they desire would solve this, unless there is some obvious reason I'm not seeing.

2) Given it depends on how many tabs you have open, (as most people I'd suspect normally have less than 10), and they are only 1KB each, I don't see the space issue here...plus they are within's XY folder so not in the way really...or...??

Oh, right: they are stored. I'm surprised... Frankly, I don't remember the reason why they are not loaded, and in the code it looks like a bug: it looks as if I forgot the line that reads the data!

So how should it be? (My self I do not use find templates, nor more than one search result tab, so I personally have no opinion.)

Well, looking a bit it looks like a bug that was introduced at some point, maybe when the list turned in to a checkboxlist, and then thought as normal/expected behavior...

I mean when it was adeed to the Templates obviously it was intented to be restored as well...

Code: Select all

v3.60.0117 - 14.02.05 16:50
    * Exclude Folders are now saved to templates as well. Note, that
your old templates will now effectively clear the exclude folders
listing, so take care and re-save them first before loading.
...and I checked, and for sure it did!

So I'd say they should be restored, but while I use templates myself I do not actually use Excluded Folders, so I won't really be affected by this...

Well, thanks for digging that up! Good find for such a new user. I hope you do not find more like this...

Given that a template may have not been used for some time, and Excludes may have changed, I'd prefer that this be switchable in some manner, so as not to clobber current excludes with obsolete ones...but yet allow other users to do so if they wish.

... in some manner ... that's the problem. It will be hard to find a way that's fool-proof dead-easy intuitive.

Like a checkbox under the "Load Template" button, that'd say "Load Excluded Folders" ?

I might be wrong, but that window is required to load a template, right? So it would be right there, visible, and would allow one to load them or not easily, no?

I had to post my last comment in a hurry as I was late for a meeting in town...anyway, as jacky wrote, there seems to be sufficient space (and precedent) to put another option under the two current ones on dialog panel.

A checkbox would be fine, but for label, I'd maybe say "Use Template Excluded Folders" or "Use Template Excludes" (shorter)...or..."Process Template Excludes"...or...going the other way..."Ignore Excludes in Template"....something along those lines... as "Load Excluded Folders" could be possibly confusing as to what it implies.

A template is also loaded each time a finding tab is opened.

The question is: do we want global excluded folders are tab/template-specific. There could be a checkbox in the Options tab... "Load Excluded Folders per tab"... but: who will understand this??
