Re: Feature or Flaw
Feature. This is intended as you show it (apart from the colors ). Looks better than painting under the icons.

I do not agree. Not sure if anybody else have thought about it?????
"Form follows Function" as it goes among building architects.
The precise path should be followed IMHO. Once you start changing standards and reasoning - there is a real chance to end up having a mess.
At least you did not mention the taste in music. :-)

I agree with you, it does not show the correct path.
If you like Gospel Music, I assume you like Mahalia Jackson, a remarkable singer.
Don:
"sort4..." is a sub of "W9M", this is not shown by tree path tracing. This is made more obvious by the gaps in the trace where there is no path line. How can you say that is correct? It might look better, but it is not correct. Beauty is not necessarily truth (if you know The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

Re: Feature or Flaw
Hm - if you look on the horizontal instead of the vertical lines, it - at least - is a bit better, isn't it?
Having read this topic I first thought the same.
Then I noticed: I *never* had a problem with it. So it can't be sooo bad.

Yes, form follows function. And this is what it does here, too. I should have said "***Also*** looks better than painting under the icons.".
You are free to do a mock-up of your idea and will see that it does not work...

Re: Feature or Flaw
I see no problem with the line running through or under icons.
So far I have not paid attention to this myself. Just looking for a cleaner more refined XY.
I took it this far and leave it to others to voice their opinion. (And carry the cross the next step <grin>)
I'm out of time...
