WinRAR and Drag'n'Drop behaviour

Post by tomuser »

I recently noticed different behaviour using XYplorer and WinRAR. If I open some .rar archive and want to add some more files into this archive using drag'n'drop then WinRAR pops up new window and asks to select some files from there despite I have them selected in XYplorer and dragging them into archive. So I have to make one additional step and select files second time manually again and then hit OK and OK once more. So then I tried same operation but this time selected files from Windows Explorer and not from XYplorer and then dragged into .rar archive then I have to hit only OK and everything is done. So if I use XYplorer I cans see that it cannot add file list into WinRAR file selection field and opens automatically append dialog window to select files. If using Windows Explorer then I can see that file selection field is filled with selected file names automatically.

As I moved recently into Windows 10 (about month ago) I don't know is it related to this somehow or is something changed in XYplorer during this time. At least one party - XYplorer, WinRAR, Windows 10, Windows Explorer - is acting different than earlier. Anybody else noticed this? Hopefully this can be fixed somehow?

W10 is 64bit (v1511), WinRar 5.40 64bit.

You're right, and it's WinRAR.
I've been using WinRAR 5.30 and drag-drop worked ok. I just updated to 5.40, and experienced the annoyance you've described.

Could it also be a bitness problem, i.e. has anybody tried with a 32bit version of WinRAR?

hmm, hmm. WinRAR v5.40 32bit does not exhibit the problem.
But to be clear, 64bit v5.30 didn't have this problem either.

Any difference if you tick Configuration | Shell Integration | Drag and Drop | Use standard shell drag and drop?

I had that enabled. No difference when unchecked.

Phew, at least I'm not the only one and this behaviour can be reproduced by others :D

It did until the problem was fixed this past June. Maybe there's a clue in that:

Looked at it, but I think this time it's another problem.

I'll get the new WinRAR when I find the time. Maybe they fix it first.

Is there any news or progress regarding this case in XYplorer Land?

Does seems to be a problem with 64 bit WinRAR 5.40 (when used with XYplorer). I don't see it with 5.31 64bit, but then reproduced the problem when I installed 5.40. Then reverted back to 5.31 and problem again gone. So I suggest contacting WinRAR support and see if they can remedy this, even though it also involves XYplorer but not File Explorer. Or at least find out technically what they changed with drag/drop in 5.40 so Don could accomodate.
Running on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit quad-core ASUS G752-VY notebook with 64 GB RAM, over 26 external USB3 drives attached via multiple powered hubs with letters and mount points, totaling 120+ TB.

Is anybody of you able to drag a file in the filepane of XYplorer directly into a RAR achive file? See Screenshot. I am not sure if the thread is about this certain functionality (which I miss very much in XYplorer and which work in Windows explorer), or if the thread is about dragging some files from XYplorer into an already opened WinRAR (archive) window. The drop error which is shown in the screenshot happens on my system with every WinRAR version (64 bit or 32 bit) mentioned in this thread. (Windows 10 Pro x64)

Got it, it's a rights thing: XYplorer needs admin rights to make it work.

Whoops, wrong analysis. Actually it is this tweak that makes the difference:

Code: Select all

DropOnRarSpecial=1
Change log:

Code: Select all

v16.80.0015 - 2016-05-30 14:33
    + Added tweak to support dropping on RAR archives via the RAR command line
      interface. Set the tweak to 1 if the normal shell drop fails (still
      unclear why it fails on RAR archives.)
        DropOnRarSpecial=1
      This will add the dropped files to the dropped-on RAR archive without

Thank you!

Code: Select all

DropOnRarSpecial=1
works like a charm with XYplorer. No problem with the actual verision WinRAR 5.40 (x64).
