Is it possible to disable tabs?

Post by xpxy »

Hello!

In
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12182
there was a discussion with regards to "open in new window/instance" instead of "open in new tab", this is NOT meant here.

I just want to get rid of tabs, i.e. everything should open in the current tab, by optional (of course) setting (which then I would have always active, notwithstanding the fact that most users are happy with multiple tabs).

As I understand current settings, new selections are displayed within the current tab, if it's not "blocked", but any SPECIAL functionality, like search / filter / etc., opens a NEW tab for displaying its results, and I want to get rid of that, and also, when I do not need tabs, the whole tab screen real estate should be allowed for a higher list display instead (i.e. not "display one single tab" when tabs are de-activated anyway).

Can this be done currently?
Must I do a complete re-install of XYplorer, as mentioned in the thread linked-to above? I do NOT want to get rid of "two-pane" though, as mentioned in that thread.
Could a simple option "de-activate tabs (so that any new result would be displayed in the current pane, replacing the current pane contents) be implemented?

Additional question: As for the previous question, but would it be possible to have an option / toggle "display in the current pane" vs "display in the other pane"?

Thank you very much!

(EDIT: sorry for mixing up tabs and panes early on, now corrected.)

Simply set this to 1:

Code: Select all

Configuration | Tabs | Maximum number of tabs
Your other wish I don't understand. Please explain.

but any SPECIAL functionality, like search
You can define if the search opens a new tab or displays it's result in the current one:
Configuration | Find Files & Branch View | Find Files | Show search results in: Current tab

Configuration | Tabs | Maximum number of tabs
Can you tweak that behavior a bit, Don?

It's nice to limit the amount (e.g. to one tab only) but the "warning" that appears every time XY tries to exceed the limit somehow defeats this feature.

Maybe an option inside this text box to:
[x] Understood, don't bother me again

Or as a tweak:
TabExeedWarning=0

I get the warning only when I do "open new tab". I think this makes sense.

THIS IS THE EDITED POST:

Hello Don and highend,

1) I'm very sorry to have bothered you, entirely my fault, had searched for that some months ago, had not found it, wanted to make better use of it today and posted my question, without doing a new search in the Settings. "Tab 0 = no limit" and "Tab 1 = in fact NO tab" could perhaps made be clearer by doing the comment "(0 = no limit (default), 1 = just the pane, with no tab)".

2) By the option / switch (Ideally, with assignable key combination AND with assignable button or such, so that the current setting (on or off) would be instandtly visible) I suppose I meant (when I wrote it) that for every function XYplorer normally would use another tab (if that setting was not set to "1" = "no tab"), it would use the other pane instead.

NOW, I mean THIS with it: a general switch "same" vs "new", which would use a same TAB (or not, i.e. a new one), by default (i.e. when there are tabs), and which would use the same, or the other PANE if "number of TABS" is set to "1" = no tabs.

This would apply to any command that would normally use a new tab (e.g. searches) (or the other PANE: almost nothing, see below): If the "TOGGLE NEW" is set to "OFF", the same tab would be used instead (and if there are no tabs, the same PANE would be used instead of the other pane), and if the "TOGGLE NEW" is set to "ON", the SAME tab or toggle would be used.

I am aware of the fact that logically, this is a little bit weird, since, for many commands, the SAME PANE is used anyway, and for almost no command (except for "copy/move to other pane"), the other pane is used, so "same pane" is the regular way of doing things, whilst for thoses "special commands" like "search", a NEW tab (and hopefully pane, instead) would be the default behavior, so in one situation, the toggle "same vs new one" would trigger the default behavior, and in another instance, it would trigger the non-default behavior.

But anyway, I seriously think that a toggle which GLOBALLY switches the target to "same tab/pane" or "new tab / the other pane" could be helpful for many users.

In my case, I could e.g. have a non-filtered / non-flattened-out view in the left pane, and a filtered / flattenened-out view in the right one, and tab users could specify if they want those special views instead of the current one, in the current pane, or in a new one.

Btw., "ex flattened-out" vs. "Global Visual Filters" and now "current flattened out" is only evident after thorough reading the help file. The "ex flattened-out" has been renamed (I do not find it in the "What's New" list, would have to read the entries there; it's "Branch View" now), whilst the new "do a physical flatten-out" function is "flatten-out" now, thankfully with a dialog "Do you really want to...", but in that dialog, without a hint "This will physicall...". Thankfully, there is an "undo", but I suppose this will have be a problem for more than one user. ;-(

I agree that the "physical flatten-out" command is in the "Edit" menu, and the "traditional flatten-out" command is in the "View" menu, but both are hidden in respective sub-menus, and if you are not aware of the existence of both, up-front, mixing them up (or then, never finding the new one) will be quite easy...

Also, the naming of the two seems to be a little bit unhappy, too, since it's the physical flatten-out which takes the name of the traditional NON-physical flatten-out function which can be found in some other file managers... (Of course, all these "I do not find (in time)" problems only arise of of the stunningly overwhelming functionality of XYplorer... ;-) )

This being said, many, many thanks to you, admin and highend, for your very kind (and quick!) answers, my XY use is so much smoother now!

P.S.:

"Maybe an option inside this text box to:
[x] Understood, don't bother me again"

I LOVE such hints which are only displayed in the function-specific "beginner's" stage, but abundantly there! ;-)

P.S. 2:

After closing XY and reopening it, with the "tabs: only 1" setting, the - completely unnecessary and unwanted - tab REMAINS, possibly because of the "+" sign and the "down arrow", but other file managers enlarge the list display pane instead, which would thus be the expected behavior here.
