Sammay,
I really appreciate your efforts. Even though I'm old and retired - I fear this could become a slippery slope
and end up taking a lot more time that I'm willing to spend on ANY single program.
Using win10 has been an ordeal with all the hidden updates and crap we are all burdened with.
Like the "Dec 12" update that caused audio to get lost (I bought a $35 external sound card) and many
other configurations. Installing Win 10 in my old Win 7 PC about a month ago was painless. This was unanticipated.
No programs were lost and no config files were upset. I am not a M$ fan :-)

When I asked you to compare your two computers I meant you should identify whether there is any difference between the two that could explain that only one of the has a problem opening MS ...x files.
- Is the OS on both of them is W10 64bit?
- and so on for the other questions...

Yes they are both W10 and 64bit and even the software is the same office 2010
The old is just a good solid standard 5 yr old desktop with HDs etc.
The new is the best money can buy as of July 2015 (without going nutz)

Perhaps XY can not handle the speed :-)

Office 2010 itself installed with the same bitness on both? If yes then I'm out of ideas.

And No, XY can certainly handle the speed - it does on mine at least.

Word was installed in win7 which was then upgraded. The default was 32bit I think.
In the fast one Win 10 was installed first and then word 2010 - unable to find an 'about' screen
It was installed using the default whatever that is or was.
Both are up to date with W10.
