sticky "sort by"

Post by hdelman »

Hi. Usually, I want all of my folders' contents sorted by name. Sometimes, though, I click the "modified" column, so I can find the most recent additions. My concern is that if move to another folder, and then return to the one previously changed to sort by "modified", it is back to sorting by name and I need re-click "modified." Is there a way to have a folder always return to its last selected "sort by?" Thank you.

Welcome to the club.

Menu - View - Folder View Settings - Save Folder View
for the folder that needs the different settings

Thanks for the help, but that's not quite what I want. Your suggestion did keep the sort as "modified" when I left the folder and returned. But when I'm done with that view, and want to return the folder back to sort by name, I need to go back and set a new default. I was hoping for an option that saves each folder's "sort by" automatically. In other words, without needing to repeatedly go to the menus, I'd simply like each folder to display in whatever sort order it was showing the last time I looked at it. Is that possible?

Mine behaves as you describe... So it's possible. I think the setting might be in the same location Highend was talking about...
Make sure this is checked:
EDIT: Actually.... Maybe not. Now my last used sort order is not being remembered when I browse back to a folder. I'm SURE it was being remembered a minute ago though!!!

I've found that if I uncheck "enable folder view settings", then the selected "sort by" is maintained as I move across all folders, but that's not what I want either. I imagine that to do what I am asking, XYP would need to maintain a list of sort selections for every folder on my hard drive.

No, you don't. Use the "Folder view settings" toolbar button. When you want a folder to stick the sorting, simply click on it. When you are done with the view, just click on it again. You can always see if the sorting is sticky by the pressed state of that toolbar button.
