Any good software sites?

Post by admin »

Now that download.com aka CNet is completely run down and rotten (they worked hard on this for years and IMO finally succeeded), is there any respectable and globally known software site left?

For common software I'm using https://chocolatey.org/, it's like apt-get but for windows.

Here are a few I regularly visit. I run almost everything in portable mode but there is plenty of regular software in these.

additionally:
http://www.alternativeto.net
and
http://www.snapfiles.com (used to be http://www.webattack.com a long time ago)

I saw that on alternativeto.net XY is listed under "Free or Open Source" but not under "Commercial" licenses. (http://alternativeto.net/software/xyplorer/)

On the other hand on snapfiles.com it is listed under "Shareware (Free Trial)" but not under "Free Software". (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/tracker.html)

alternativeto: Somebody called "Venom88" has changed this recently. I'll change it back. This is a major problem alternativeto: everybody can edit the descriptions. Madness. I cannot call this a serious site.

snapfiles: I know this site for many many years, but stopped submitting years ago because there was no trace anymore of any human activity. In my impression this is just a bot, and there are less and less visitors. It's near dead.

techsupportalert: quite popular, but also near dead. Gizmo is not what he used to be.

portablefreeware.com: also not much activity.

filehippo: go there and you are flooded by ads, no thanks.

Anyway, I thank you all for answering to this thread!

Not exactly what you're looking for but you can find some good software and discussions on these subreddits:

https://www.reddit.com/r/software/

Add: a nifty open source alternative site -

Did you know about Softpedia? (may look like a confusing mess of "Metro" flatness and random buttons everywhere)

Yes, I had some promotions with them some years ago. Maybe the last big, popular, human-driven software site that's actually usable?

There is also this website that has a construction worker picture as its logo. I suddenly forgot its name though... Hopefully someone will have an idea what I'm talking about...

Typical zombie site. Look at the selection of screenshots and you see the work of a robot:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details ... ition.html

The URL says "xyplorer_free_edition", but then it shows a price (a wrong price, of course):
Shareware $29.95+

Just a click farm.

PS: Just checked my stats and majorgeeks is doing not as bad as I thought! It seems to attract quite a bunch of people -- despite being a zombie.
