File Extensions

Post by BristolPete »

Hi! I've just discovered XY and really like it. I was wondering if there is any way of hiding file extensions - .jpg .dotx and the like. The reason for this is it is too easy when changing a name to delete the extension rendering the file unopenable - I know I've done it too many times. No prob if you notice and reinsert but if you miss it you are really stuffed. I'm using Windows 10 and on the Explorer-View page I have the File Name Exension box unticked so they don't show on Windows Explorer.
I'm probably missing somethign obvious - any help appreciated.

You can turn them off by going to Tools -> Customize List -> Hide Extensions.

Or a way to avoid the renaming issue you mention is Tools -> Configuration -> Sort and Rename -> Rename (section) -> (check box) Exclude extension on rename

Double Wow!
Firstly, I am really impressed at the flexibility of XY - I think my problem was finding the wood in all the trees. I am really impressed.
Secondly, I couldn't believe how fast you guys were onto my question - a miliion thanks. Well done to all of you, especailly to "TheQwerty" who took the trouble to make an idiots guide - just what I need.

Is there a way to hide specific extensions though? For example hiding the .lnk from shortcuts.

you should know that hiding extensions is a considerable security risk. (Eg, a malware exe might give itself an innocent file icon and name)

I suggest you give hermhart's suggestion a shot first -

If you don't like it (but I think you will), you can always go back to hiding extensions.

I am sorry but this simply does not work.

I can confirm that even with the setting Customize List: Hide File Extensions, extensions are still showing. I have tried numerous reboots, open and closing the application, it simply does not work. It used to work but now it's not. What has happened? Do I have to lose all my configurations just to reset this somehow? Please help dear friends!

I will be happy to take screenshots or vids if you need proof but, extensions are 100% still showing in all XY instances even with the appropriate setting selected. I have not had a problem with this setting until a few days ago. It does not seem to be update related.

Thank you for your help.

I mean, even Windows Explorer lets you hide extensions in list view - why was this changed after years?
(sorry for the several posts, my net is funky tonight!!)

The amount of control the 'admin' has over this forum is staggering. Talk about control freak.

Censorship disguised as "moderation" is insulting.

I truly, sincerely hope, posts actually make it to the forum otherwise perhaps word may get out that this is a sham. 4-5 posts not being approved is quite silly and lets hope this doesn't get out of hand. :) Hush hush.

Please add the option to hide file extensions back in list view, as it's been for years and years.

Thank you kindly.
