I like "Filter Selected Extensions In/Out". What say the English experts?jacky wrote:Assuming that's correct English as well, would "Filter Selected Extensions In/Out" sound less confusing? "Filter by selected extensions" vs
"Filter selected extensions"
Hm. It might be correct English, but I'm not happy with it. Quite confusing for non English speakers...
Or "Filter by Selected Extensions" vs "Filter Selected Extensions Out" ?

These two work for me, as the second is clearly keeping them out and thus the first is keeping them in...but that was obvious, IMHO, already...jacky wrote:Or "Filter by Selected Extensions" vs "Filter Selected Extensions Out" ?
'Cause "Filter selected Ext In" doesn't quite do it for me...I know, English is weird...and I was never an English major either, but..it's my native lang.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Mine too and I agree.j_c_hallgren wrote: English is weird...and I was never an English major either, but..it's my native lang.
But here it's not just English that's being weird. Filters are funny things. Sometimes they remove something we don't want (impurities in water) sometimes they collect something we want and let the rest pass through (pigments are retained by the filter and the rinse water and other unwanteds are gotten rid of).
Whatever. I'm like JC, I can handle filtering out, but NOT filtering in!
Yet, "filter by selected ext" would leave me wondering (like you Donald, I guess) whether we were filtering the extensions out or keeping them in!
This is also weird, but would toggling between filter "selected/unselected" or "desired/ undesired" or "wanted/unwanted" or somesuch add clarity and keep the notion of "filter" in the equation.
Or is this all a bunch of mental mast... and the previous label was clear enough for us all to figure out .... ?

I agree, but I don't get what you are suggesting as caption.panorama wrote:Mine too and I agree.j_c_hallgren wrote: English is weird...and I was never an English major either, but..it's my native lang.

BTW, I still can live with this very good:
"Show Only Selected File Types."
"Hide Selected File Types."
Okay, the word "Filter" is missing, so what?! The command is in the VF section of the menu, and after using it it becomes very clear that VF is in action. There is no mystery about that. And "Type"... okay, but "hide extensions" would be quite misleading.

Indeed. That's the main reason I added the "Hide *with* selected extensions (since hiding the extension itself is clearly NOT what is desired...)admin wrote:"hide extensions" would be quite misleading, since Explorer has the option to "hide extensions" meaning something very different.
Maybe "Hide items with selected extensions" could work...(?)

Ah yes, I overlooked the with-version.avsfan wrote:Indeed. Yes, that would work nicely for me:
"Hide items with selected extensions"
"Show only items with selected extensions"
Problems anybody?

Ok, it'll show only those items, but that's assumed I think, I mean, what else could it do otherwise?? And it might lead to questions like, does that mean the "hide" options doesn't hide only items with selected extensions? So, would it keep hiding whatever is already hidden by a current VF??

Well, not really a problem but, why do you have a "only" in the show version ? Why not just "Show items with selected extensions"?

I thought it was a problem to lose "filter".admin wrote: BTW, I still can live with this very good:

Show only... or
Hide ...
does the job just fine and avoids any and all filter-related confusion, seems to me.

Gosh! I didn't expect to start such a long discussion, so there isn't much for me to add. Just a couple of comments:
Keeping the "Filter by selected extension(s)" I think "Filter out selected extension(s)" rather than "Filter Selected Extensions Out". However, I like the Show/Hide versions, "Show Only Selected File Types" and "Hide Selected File Types".

If "filter by selected extension" is seen only by itself, then it could or may be vague as to how it works...but as we are adding a "Filter out selected extension" (BTW, having 'out' as 2nd word is fine with me), right next to it on menu, then it makes it much more obvious (as I think I wrote before) that "by" will include the selected values...since one wouldn't have two options that do same thing together in a menu, right???panorama wrote:Whatever. Now, while I do agree that these command are within the VF area, and thus filter is stongly implied, I'm convinced that having the word 'filter' makes it 100% clear that is the function that will be used to do it...which "show' and 'hide' do not, IMHO.
