Note taking and information management

Post by substorm »

Hello,

I've been really enjoying XYplorer for day-to-day file/folder management needs but one area that I think has room to improve is handling of vast amounts of data.
I know that most would say that there are other products out there that are aimed at such audience but I think XYplorer already has one foot in the door and just needs to add few extra features to make it a complete knowledge management package.
Namely, I am referring to the following three items:

1) Indexed content search with keyword highlighting
I know developing a powerful search indexer is a full project on its own, but there are already numerous interesting titles out there that could be used as a plugin or addon. A few that come to mind is DTSearch and Apache Lucene. In addition, to make a full use of the search engine, a powerful internal file viewer like Oracle Outside In would come handy in order to display search hit results inside of documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, RTF, HTML, etc.). I believe XYplorer already support QuickView Standard which is based on Oracle's Outside In libraries so this is a good starting point.

2) Rich text editor with image and table support - taking notes on the fly would be a dream come true. Having multiple notes open in separate tabs with ability to open each in undocked window would even make it better. Again, maybe integrate this as an addon using some open source library.

3) Convenient tagging - something similar to Evernote or TagSpaces. This would allow to quickly group notes/files/folder by urgency/subject/time etc.

I've got more ideas but IMO the above three are the key for XYplorer to make that leap.
Let me know your feedback.

I should have better explained myself. There are other products out there that provide note taking and organizational functionality but nothing as complete as I've outlined above. I have tried probably all of the apps in this category and there is still a gap to fill. Building on top of XYplorers powerful file management capabilities, I think there is a potential to attract a larger market. A good example is TagSpaces which seems to be trying to combine both worlds (file management and organizational aspects) but it's still at a very early stage. Since XYplorer is known to have a fast development cycle, I think looking for new approaches and ideas to aid users in day-to-day activities only makes sense.

you can fulfill point 3 by combining XY's tags and click-n-search filters in the catalog.

Since XYPlorer supports Quick View Plus, maybe there is a way to tie a search indexer with that particular viewer to display search results? I hear a common response that indexing is too heavy on system resources but it could easily be scheduled or disabled. As SammaySarkar mentioned, tags are already there but could be optimized for easier access. I feel that document management is where XYplorer could really grow. Nobody else feel the same?

I have been trying to make XYplorer as a "knowledge management" tool for a long time and wrote quite some scripts (see Flat file Management). And I conclude that it's best to let:
- XY to store & organize files
- Other softwares to do Content-search & Read & Edit
I'm a casual coder using AHK language. All of my xys scripts:
